It is with regret that CherryRoad Media announces the closing of The Crookston Times

Our company is dedicated to the preservation of community journalism. Since the purchase of our 1st paper in late-2020 to today, we have prided ourselves on our ability to fight the difficult battle that newspapers face in today’s digital society. Unfortunately, that battle cannot always be won.

The Crookston Times has struggled in recent years to find its footing in this community. Since purchasing The Crookston Times, CherryRoad Media has been unable to avoid financial losses every month. The paper was losing money when we bought it, and it continued to do so. We must now come to terms with the fact that we do not have a path forward to sustainability.

And we thank those who have supported us.

Klemek Outdoors: The Common Nighthawk

Watching male common nighthawks perform their aerial courtship displays near my home recently, reminded me of the summers that I conducted my undergraduate and graduate wildlife research work on the Great Plains of North Dakota. I was constantly observing nighthawks throughout the expansive grasslands and prairie pothole landscape.

Minnesota Crookston announces hiring of Nick Stone as Fitness and Wellness Center Coordinator/Strength and Conditioning Coach

The University of Minnesota Crookston athletic department announced the hiring of Nick Stone as fitness and wellness center coordinator/strength and conditioning coach. Stone is the first full-time strength and conditioning coach for the Minnesota Crookston athletic programs. It is a pivotal position for the department, as they look to increase their competitiveness on the field, and help with injury prevention in conjunction with the UMN Crookston sports medicine staff led by Steven Krouse. Stone has a focus on competing, providing support, building a team mentality, focusing on the intent behind everything, an attention to the process, providing a positive environment, and not fearing failure. In addition to serving as the strength and conditioning coach for the athletic programs, Stone will also oversee general student wellness and fitness programming for the wellness center.

Crookston Area Chamber selects James Brandon as new board member

The Crookston Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors has selected a new board member and welcomes him to the board. James Brandon comes to the Chamber from the Crookston Police Department and filled the open seat as Shane Mendez respectfully resigned due to a career change.

Red River Trail ox cart travelers pass through Crookston

In Winnipegger Terry Doerksen's words, "the magical song of the ox cart would again be sung on the trail!" Terry and his wife, Patty, are retracing the traditional Metis trade route along the Red River Trail traveling from Winnipeg to St. Paul by ox and cart, and they recently came through Crookston.

Senior Legion Goes .500 in South Dakota

Crookston’s Senior Legion team traveled to Lennox, SD for the Dakota Classic Friday, June 17 through Sunday, June 19. The Pirates went 2-2 and finished third in their pool.

Dee Manufacturing LLC wins UMC Teambacker Scramble

The University of Minnesota Crookston Teambackers hosted a golf outing at Minakwa on Friday, June 17. The team sponsored by Dee Manufacturing LLC—Mike Christopherson, Trey Christopherson, Ethan Christopherson, Charles Eickhof and Mike Anderson—took first in Flight A with a team score of 59.
