It is with regret that CherryRoad Media announces the closing of The Crookston Times

Our company is dedicated to the preservation of community journalism. Since the purchase of our 1st paper in late-2020 to today, we have prided ourselves on our ability to fight the difficult battle that newspapers face in today’s digital society. Unfortunately, that battle cannot always be won.

The Crookston Times has struggled in recent years to find its footing in this community. Since purchasing The Crookston Times, CherryRoad Media has been unable to avoid financial losses every month. The paper was losing money when we bought it, and it continued to do so. We must now come to terms with the fact that we do not have a path forward to sustainability.

And we thank those who have supported us.

AP: Police say mother drowned children, then killed herself

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — Three children whose bodies were found in a suburban Minneapolis lake over the holiday weekend died in drownings that were classified as homicides, and their mother died of a drowning that was suicide, authorities said Tuesday as they also identified the victims.

Multiple agencies respond to McIntosh structure fire

Multiple agencies including the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, Fosston Police Department, McIntosh Fire Department, Fosston Fire Department and Essentia Ambulance responded to a residential structure fire July 3 in McIntosh. The fire happened at approximately 8:14 p.m. at 220 State St SW in McIntosh.

Jeffrey James Scharf

Jeffrey James Scharf, 52, Crookston, Minnesota, passed away unexpectedly on June 26, 2022. Cremation and a private family memorial service have taken place.

Gary Todd Sylvester

Gary Todd Sylvester, 59 of Crookston passed away peacefully at his home Saturday, June 25, 2022. Gary was born in Crookston on June 1, 1963 to loving parents Charles and Audrey Sylvester.

Night to Unite returning August 2 to UMN Crookston

Crookston's annual Night to Unite event "neighbors joining together" will return Tuesday, August 2 to the University of Minnesota Crookston. The festivities will be held from 4:30-7 p.m. on the campus mall with a wide variety of booths and activities.

MNDOT Hwy 2 Crookston study update

Where is the study now? A public open house was held on May 24. Study partners shared potential corridor alternatives, answered community questions and gathered feedback on the community’s preference for the vision for the future Highway 2 corridor.

Years ago, I installed almost two dozen wood duck houses around Assawa Lake that’s adjacent to my property. Many of those boxes have deteriorated beyond repair, but several are still in decent shape and available for occupancy each spring. I try and monitor the boxes to see what species of wildlife has taken up residency, be they gray squirrel, flying squirrel, or what have you.
