BWSR announces 2022 Outstanding Soil and Water Conservation District Employee

Bloomington, Minn. – Minnesota Board of Water and Soil Resources (BWSR) Executive Director John Jaschke presented the 2022 Outstanding Soil and Water Conservation District Employee award to Becker Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) Administrator Bryan Malone today during the Minnesota Association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts’ (MASWCD) annual convention in Bloomington. Malone also serves as Host District Manager for the Red River Valley Conservation Service Area (RRVCSA).

Hairy and Downy Woodpecker

I am fascinated by the numerous examples in Nature where two different species evolved to look alike. In some cases, the two species are very closely related, whereas in other cases the twin species are distantly related or not at all. Think of the monarch and viceroy butterflies, the least and eastern chipmunks, and downy and hairy woodpeckers, the latter pair which are the subjects of this week’s column.

U of M College of Pharmacy receives contract to continue work on contraceptive development

With the recent overturning of Roe v. Wade, contraceptive use in the United States is on peoples’ minds more than ever. While there are 12 types of contraceptives readily available for women, there are only two for men — condoms and vasectomies. In a 2019 survey from the Male Contraceptive Initiative, 70% of U.S. men aged 18 to 44 said “they are very or somewhat interested in new male contraception.”
