It is with regret that CherryRoad Media announces the closing of The Crookston Times

Our company is dedicated to the preservation of community journalism. Since the purchase of our 1st paper in late-2020 to today, we have prided ourselves on our ability to fight the difficult battle that newspapers face in today’s digital society. Unfortunately, that battle cannot always be won.

The Crookston Times has struggled in recent years to find its footing in this community. Since purchasing The Crookston Times, CherryRoad Media has been unable to avoid financial losses every month. The paper was losing money when we bought it, and it continued to do so. We must now come to terms with the fact that we do not have a path forward to sustainability.

And we thank those who have supported us.

COUNTY HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE COLLECTION EVENTS

Polk County Environmental Services is once again holding its annual Household Hazardous Waste Collection events. The first collection event will be held at the Fertile Fairgrounds on Friday, June 2nd from 3-6pm. The second collection will be at the East Shore Beach Area of Maple Lake off County Highway 10 from 9 - noon Saturday, June 3.

Art students win state awards

The Pirate Fine Arts Booster’s met recently and honored six arts students who placed in Minnesota State Competition. Backrow, from left, David Threatt, All-State Band, French horn. Front Row, Zara Baig, 4th in State Speech, Humor category, Samantha Rezak, 2nd in State Speech, Storytelling category, Frankie Torvinen, Photo to be hung at the State Capitol Office Building one year, Emily Shea, Ceramic piece placed in the Minnesota State Art Exhibition.

Memorial Day service planned

The Crookston Veterans Council has planned two Memorial Day Services Monday. The first will be at 10 am at Oakdale Cemetary.

Register for RiverView’s Free Balance Classes Beginning June 1

RiverView Health’s Rehab Services will hold “A Matter of Balance’’ classes for anyone who has fallen in the past, has restricted activities because of falling concerns, or is worried about falls. The free classes will teach skills in improving balance, flexibility, and strength.

Minnesota Crookston Soccer Set for New Era in 2023; Welcome In Seven Newcomers

The University of Minnesota Crookston soccer program is opening a new era of soccer in the fall of 2023 with new Head Coach Neil Mancktelow. Mancktelow was on the sidelines last season as an assistant coach, but 2023 will be his first leading the ship for the Golden Eagles. He will be joined by Assistant Coach Morgan Philliber, who arrives after a stint as assistant coach at Buena Vista University, and a decorated career as goalkeeper at the University of Wisconsin- Superior.
