Minnesota Crookston Softball Sends Out Seniors with Sweep of SMSU

On Senior Day, Minnesota Crookston did the best thing possible; sweep their opponent. The Golden Eagles closed out their 2023 campaign by walking off on Southwest Minnesota State in game one, 6-5 on a Whitnee Curry (So., IF/ OF, Lincoln, Neb.) single and mercy-ruling the Mustangs in game two, 12-4, in five innings.

Three selected for Girls State

Nashalie Tellez, Ny Nguyen, and Emily Soberon have been selected to attend the 2023 American Legion Auxiliary Girls State from June 11-17th at Bethel University. Girls State is a weeklong experience of learning about Minnesota government at the local, county and state levels by their participation in the process.

Crookston FFA competes at state

Crookston FFA sent 32 members to the 94th Minnesota FFA State Convention. Crookston FFA competed in various Career Development Events (CDE’s) and Leadership DEvelopment Events (LDE’s) from Sunday, April 23, 2023 to Tuesday, April 25, 2023.

Students receive art awards

Two Crookston High School students received special awards from the Northwest Minnesota Arts Council. Juried by the Northwest Arts Council Regional Art Show, and by the Office of Senator Mark Johnson, Frankie’s Torvinen ‘s photograph titled, Replaced by Positive Energy, has been chosen to appear for a year at the State Capitol Office Building.

2023 Student Awards Ceremony held at UMN Crookston

The University of Minnesota Crookston held its 2023 Student Awards Ceremony April 20 in Bede Ballroom and students were honored at the formal event for their work over the school year. Among those recognized were UMC Students of the Year Bren Fox, Laney Swiers, and Ben Olander.

Thief River Falls to host Nordic Fest

Nordic Fest is an annual event in Thief River Falls put on by Snorre Lodge of the Sons of Norway. Flags from Scandinavian countries, including the Sami, will be flying throughout downtown Thief River Falls from May 12 through May 22.

Finches

All winter long (and one of the longest and snowiest ever) there has been a surprising lack of bird diversity at my backyard bird feeders—until recently. Finches have been showing up! American goldfinches, purple finches, and a handful of pine siskins and common redpolls, too.
