The Crookston girls' hockey team hosted Detroit Lakes on Thursday night in an important Section 8AA tilt.

Nora Peterson (Jr. F), scored to give the Pirates a 2-1 lead with just under three minutes remainng, and then capped the game off with a second goal a minute and a half later, giving the Pirates the victory, their fifth of the season.

"For us to have those one goal wins, tight games, I think that's good for us as a program to get better," said Crookston head coach Tim Moe.

At 5-5, Crookston already has more victories than it did all of last season.

Morgan Nelson (8, D) scored in the first period, off assists from Kylee Meier (Sr., F) and MacKenze Epema (Sr., D).

"There was times they couldn't get the puck out of their zone," Moe said. "We were buzzing, we were moving well, we were playing with confidence. When we do that, we have some talent on this team, and to be able to do some things, it's just a nice thing to have. Confidence is just huge."

The Lakers equalized with 17 seconds left in the second period on a goal by Sara Freeman.

Peterson's two goals Thursday gave her five goals in the last three games for the Pirates.

"She's a dynamic player," Moe said. "She's just got so much skill and potential."

Grace Koshney (Jr., G) made 21 saves for Crookston, while her Detroit Lakes counterpart, Leah Honer, made 35.

"Detroit Lakes has been that one rung above us so we wanted to take that next step, something we talk about all the time," Moe said. "There's a process to getting better and it comes with taking little steps at a time, you can't do it all overnight. It was just another step for us, but a big step, because now if we can keep that up, that maybe puts us into the next level."
