Pirate Boys Soccer recorded another win Saturday on Parents Day and Senior Day when they dominated Mesabi East with a 5-2 score. Junior Noah Kiel had a hat trick with three goals plus Senior Ben Brantner and 8th-grader Brannon Tangquist each walked away with one.
Coach Lon Boike told the Times he was “especially pleased” as to how well his team played at both ends of the field.
“Our seniors played very well and showed great leadership on the field,” said Boike. “In addition to Noah Kiel’s goals over the weekend, Ben Brantner got a couple goals and assists, and Jacob Brunelle had a goal and assist.”
“Kaleb was strong in goal and made some great saves to help preserve our lead in both matches,” he added. “The defense also stepped up in clutch situations to help preserve the wins as well.”
Pirate Boys take on the Green Wave in East Grand Forks Tuesday and their Thursday home game against Walker-Hackensack-Akeley has been cancelled.
“While we feel good about the weekend and our confidence is strong, we know we will have to play well to go over to EGF and beat them!” Boike concluded.
Friday night, the Hibbing boys and girls team arrived in Crookston to play field by field. The game ended at 2-1, in the Pirates’ favor.
In the first three minutes of the game, the Pirates’ made their only goal of the half, Ben Brantner firing off a curved corner kick, the spin throwing the goalie off and scoring their first point. The game went back and forth until just before halftime, an opponent dribbled then took a shot at the net, tying the score 1-1.
Starting off the second half on a high note, the Pirates’ Jacob Brunell scored immediately within the first few minutes, taking the score to 2-1. “The whole team were their own leaders,” head boys soccer coach Lon Boike. “Our passing and practicing our first touches seem to be growing better. We will still be working on defense and increasing scoring opportunities.”
The Pirate boys will be back on the field for a home game against Detroit Lakes on Tuesday, the first of October, beginning at 7 pm.
