Crookston's Andy Gjerswold is coaching inaugural team.

The University of Minnesota Crookston trap shooting club officially got under way with their first season this week. The Golden Eagles are a competitive club operating under the athletic department at Minnesota Crookston. They will compete in the USA College Clay Target League, which is launching competition this fall. The development of the Minnesota Crookston program and the USA College Clay Target League is due to a major growth in the sport nationwide and in Minnesota in recent years.

The Golden Eagles are led by Crookston-native Andy Gjersworld, who has been around the sport throughout his life, as he shot for the Crookston High School team, and has been assisting his father Darren Gjerswold with the Crookston High School team, where Darren is the head coach. In addition, Andy is being assisted by Minnesota Crookston student Mitch Gebhardt from Watkins, Minn., who has been a major aid to Gjerswold in the launch of the program.

Minnesota Crookston started practice Tues., Sept. 17 as they opened up their practice/reserve week with the USA College Clay Target League. The Golden Eagles also practice Thurs., Sept. 19. Minnesota Crookston will be assigned to a conference on Sept. 22 prior to their first week of competitive shooting within the USA College Clay Target League.

The Golden Eagles first competition week in league opens up the week of Sept. 23. Minnesota Crookston will shoot Tues., Sept. 24 and Thurs., Sept. 26 from 3-6 p.m. at the Crookston Gun Club. The results each week will be compiled and rankings will come out within Minnesota Crookston’s conference.

The Golden Eagles begin their second competition week as they will shoot Tues., Oct. 1 and Thurs., Oct. 3 from 3-6 p.m. at the Crookston Gun Club.

Minnesota Crookston will compete for the third week within their USA College Clay Target League season Tues., Oct. 8 and Thurs., Oct. 10 from 3-6 p.m. at the Crookston Gun Club.
The Golden Eagles will have their fourth week of competition Tues., Oct. 15 and Thurs., Oct. 17 from 3-6 p.m. at the Crookston Gun Club.

The final week of competition for the USA College Clay Target League season will be the week of Oct. 21. Minnesota Crookston will have competition dates Tues., Oct. 22 and Thurs., Oct. 24 from 3-6 p.m.

In addition to their USA College Clay Target League schedule, Minnesota Crookston will also travel to Fargo, N.D., for an exhibition with North Dakota State University Sat., Oct. 19.

Minnesota Crookston has 26 student-athletes on the first Golden Eagle trap shooting club roster. The Golden Eagles are represented by 18 men and eight women on their inaugural roster. Minnesota Crookston has 20 student-athletes from Minnesota, five from North Dakota, and one from Iowa.

The Golden Eagles were joined at their first full USA College Clay Target practice by Director of Athletics Stephanie Helgeson. Minnesota Crookston’s trap shooting student-athletes were all excited and eager to get under way and thankful for the addition of trap as a club sport for the Golden Eagles.

Minnesota Crookston will practice and do all competitive trap shooting at the Crookston Gun Club located just off U.S. Highway 75 to the Northwest of the University of Minnesota Crookston campus. The staff at the Crookston Gun Club has been very helpful and welcoming to the Golden Eagles, as they have served as safety officers during shoots and have been very inviting to the student-athletes.
