The Pirates lost to East Polk 21-11 and beat Red Lake County Central 23-12.

Twelve innings and 67 runs later, the Crookston Pirates managed to split a pair of games in Oklee and collected their second win of the season. The Pirates lost by a 10-run mercy rule to East Polk in their first game but stormed back and run-ruled Red Lake County Central in a 23-12 victory.

For Pirates Head Coach Robbe Nessler, it is his first win of the season as head coach as he was not present for the team's first against Northern Freeze.

“I was sorry I could not be at the first win of the season, but also very proud of the way they played today,” Nessler said on the game against RLCC. “We were holding on, continuing to build the lead and I was happy I got to be a part of this one.”

East Polk L 21-11

Crookston trailed the North Stars 13-11 heading into the bottom of the sixth, but eight runs in the frame enforced the mercy rule of 10 runs after five innings, and East Polk earned a "walk-off" win against the Pirates.

After watching a 9-3 lead evaporate, the North Stars (7-8-1, 3-4 Section 8AA) kept tacking on runs to preserve their lead and went on to win comfortably. Jaclyn Hubbard (Sr. 3B/1B), who started the sixth inning with a single, drove in the 21st run which awarded East Polk the clinching 10-run lead.

The North Stars used two pitchers to get through the slugfest: Carlie Sander (Jr. P) and Ashten Wolfe (Fr. P). Sander tallied the win going 4.1 innings and striking out six. Sophia Steiner (Jr. RHP) started in the circle for the Pirates and went two innings allowing nine runs, seven earned. Jasmin Hanson (Jr. RHP) pitched 3.2 innings until Hubbard ended the contest.

All but one of East Polk's batters notched a hit, and Emily Chalich (So.) recorded three RBIs to lead the team in the statistic.

Emma Boll (So. SS) and Kasey Cwikla (Jr. 3B) delivered multi-hit performances for Crookston, and Cwikla and Amber Cymbaluk (So. C) added two and three RBIs respectively to lead the team offensively.

Red Lake County Central W 23-12

Crookston (2-16, 0-11 Section 8AA) led throughout and Jenna Coauette (Fr. RHP) pitched a complete game for her first win of the season.

The freshman righty tossed six innings, allowed 12 runs, nine earned, and struck out six on her way to the Pirates' second win of the season and first via mercy rule.

A wild pitch, a couple of bases-loaded walks and a two-RBI hit by Kenze Epema (So. RF) made for a five-run first inning by the Pirates. Cymbaluk completed the team's second five-run frame in the third with a single, and Crookston jumped out to an 11-0 lead.

In the blink of an eye, the 11-run advantage dwindled to four with the Pirates ahead 12-8 after four innings.

“We started out just hitting well,” Nessler said. “I told them we cannot become complacent. We cannot assume anything is ours. Sure enough, we let them back in, and it was 12-8 at one point. But we had numerous girls today with multiple extra base hits. We had lots of production.”

The defense of RLCC (3-11, 3-9 Section 8A) fell apart in the top of the fifth allowing Crookston to score another five runs. The first three scored on errors, and Boll and Maddi Salentine (Jr. 2B) put together back-to-back RBI hits to make it a 17-8 lead.

Boll and Salentine performed the same act in the sixth driving in runs in consecutive at-bats, and Hanson joined in on the action bringing in Boll on a single. Crookston went on to score six in the inning putting the team three outs away from a win, up 23-11.

The first three RLCC batters reached, a run scored but an out during an at-bat and two strikeouts ended the game for a 23-12 Pirate win.

“Through the whole season, we had 54 runs up until the second game today,” Nessler said. “So we essentially halfed our season’s run production in a single game. I told the girls after the game I’m happy we got a win, but we definitely let them back into this game. I want them to think about the fact that we can always strive to do better.”

Crookston will go for their second win in a row when they head to Thief River Falls for the regular season finale and a date with Northern Freeze, the team the Pirates beat 12-11 in extra innings on May 14.
