Crookston beat East Grand Forks 4-3 and Fergus Falls 5-2.
EAST GRAND FORKS - The Crookston Pirates used two wins over East Grand Forks and Fergus Falls in one day to sweep the EGF triangular and double their season win total. Nick Garmen (Sr.), Jack Garmen (Fr.), Blake Fee (Sr.) and Logan Wardner (Sr.) all recorded two victories on the afternoon as the Pirates improved to 4-10 and winners of four of their last five matches.
“The Fergus Falls one was awesome,” Pirates Head Coach Cody Brekken said. “We kind of needed that one just to not get the seven seed [section tournament]. We’ll for sure be six or above. The East Side one is tough. It was good, we beat them, we swept them on the year, but their one guy is out right now, their two guy is out right now and their number five guy is out right now. But that’s part of it.”
East Grand Forks W 4-3
Two singles and two doubles victories did it for the Pirates as they completed their second win over the Green Wave to earn the season sweep.
Nick Garmen beat Josiah Gerhls (Jr.) 6-0, 6-1 in No. 1 singles, Jack Garmen downed Bryce Huot (Sr.) 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2 singles, the No. 1 doubles pair of Fee and Wardner teamed up to defeat Justin Smerer (Jr.) and Parker Anderson (Sr.) 6-2, 5-7, 10-3 and Logan Schultz (Sr.) and Dilon Owens (Sr.) won against Rudy Juarez (Sr.) and Cole Gerber (So.) in No. 3 doubles 2-6, 6-1, 10-8.
No. 2 Singles
Justin Marciniak (Sr.) def. Mason LaPlante (Sr.) 6-2, 6-1
No. 4 Singles
Seth Aaker (Fr.) def. Mason Owens (Fr.) 6-4, 6-3
No. 2 Doubles
Tanner Mack (Sr.)/Tanner Lubinski (So.) def. Robert Janorschke (Sr.)/Tanner Janorschke (Sr.) 4-6, 6-3, 10-3
Fergus Falls W 5-2
With their previous three wins coming in 4-3 affairs, the Pirates finally provided themselves some cushion beating the Otters 5-2.
Singles wins included Nick Garmen over Isaac Alghren (Sr.) 6-0, 6-0, Jack Garmen on top 6-1, 6-1 against Declan Young (Sr.) and Owens beating Blayne Schuetzle (Sr.) 6-4, 6-3.
Fee and Wardner notched their second win of the day beating Maverc Kalenberg (So.) and Colton Partain (So.) 6-0, 6-4, and the Janorschke brothers got in the victory column 6-2, 6-3 over Josh Kasper (So.) and Conner Ackerson (So.).
“Mason [Owens] has proven that he’s really kind of held [No. 4 Singles] well winning today against Fergus,” Brekken said. “Jack Garmen has been playing much better at the three singles spot rather than the two, because Logan had been gone. Now that Logan’s back, we’ll have Logan in the doubles, Mason [Owens] in singles and Jack gets bumped down one. It’s a good domino effect since Logan’s been back.”
No. 2 Singles
Joe Connelly (Sr.) def. Mason LaPlante (Sr.) 6-3, 6-2
No. 3 Doubles
Kaden Peterson (Jr.)/Blake Schuetzle (Sr.) def. Dilon Owens (Sr.)/Logan Schultz (Sr.) 6-3, 6-3
With section tournament seeding taking place on Wednesday, May 15, Brekken feels confident his squad will earn at least a six seed out of the seven teams.
As for a lineup come tournament time, Brekken likes the one he used today in certain matchups but knows it may require some tweaking against the section's top teams.
“This has worked well for us against the East Side-type teams,” Brekken said on the lineup. “This worked against Fergus, this will be a good lineup against Detroit Lakes, but it gets pretty tough against the singles-heavy teams we’ll see.”
The regular season has come to an end, and the Pirates will next play at the Section 8A Tournament in Detroit Lakes on Monday, May 20.
