Crookston falls to 1-3 on the year.
CROOKSTON - Hillsboro Central Valley struck for three in the second, four in the fifth and three more in the seventh as they cruised to a 13-3 win over the Crookston Pirates.
"The guys started getting down after we were down 10-3," Pirates Acting Head Coach Alex LaFrance said. "They started muffing plays. Defensively, we were pretty good at the start, then it started going downhill after everybody started losing motivation in the game."
Gavin Wright (RHP) started the game for Hillsboro and limited the Crookston bats in five innings of work. The right-hander allowed six hits, three runs, two earned, and punched out seven Pirate hitters en route to the win.
Hillsboro pitchers struck out 10 Crookston batters on the day.
Brooks Butt (Fr. RHP) took the loss on the mound for the Pirates going 4.2 innings and allowing eight runs.
Command proved to be a common struggle among Pirate pitchers who walked eight Hillsboro hitters in seven innings.
"We just really haven't gotten a lot of experience on the mound this year," LaFrance said. "We're just trying to get some arms up there ready to throw and get ready for [a doubleheader] Thursday."
Hillsboro did the majority of their damage in the top of the second frame. Three singles led to the Burros’ second run, the third coming from Sean Miller (CF) to score Travis Doeden (LF). The next batter, Braeden Soderberg (2B), made it a 3-0 game on a sacrifice fly, and Gavin Wright (P) helped his own cause driving a double to left to cap off a three-run inning and a 4-0 lead.
The backbreaking inning occurred in the fifth when the Burros benefited from three walks and a hit batsman. One walk brought in a run and Soderberg scored two more on a single to right that took a funky bounce past Walker Winjum (Jr. 2B) to make it 9-1.
The Burros committed their second error of the game, and it led to Crookston’s second run in the fifth inning. Brady Butt (Jr. 3B) followed up with a screaming liner for a double to score Leyton Salentine (Jr. SS) and cut the deficit to 9-3. The Pirates threatened for more, but Wright escaped further trouble getting Gunner Gunderson (Fr. CF) to foul out to the catcher.
"We need to start swinging more," LaFrance said. "We're watching way too many strikes go by and swinging at junk."
The Pirates stay home for their next contests against Win-E-Mac on Thursday, May 9 at 2 p.m. and another against Sacred Heart the same day at 6 p.m.
