Grand Forks Central defeated Crookston 22-5 scoring 17 of their runs in the last two innings.

CROOKSTON - In the fifth inning, the Pirates were trying to figure out a way to scratch across two more runs and potentially win the game. In the top of the seventh, they were just searching for the third out. After trailing Grand Forks Central 5-4 through five innings, the Pirates fell 22-5 following an explosion of offense, assisted by errors, from the Knights (2-10).

Crookston (0-11) committed nine errors on the afternoon and seven occurred in the last two innings allowing one earned run out of 17 to cross home plate.

"What we just talked about was mental toughness," Pirates Head Coach Robbe Nessler said. "We had a couple errors, and then, I saw a couple girls hanging their heads. They are high schoolers, and they tend to point the finger at themselves when things aren't going well. We just had a little negativity going on, and I think that impacts the level we can play at."

On the unfortunate side of the errors sat Jasmin Hanson (Jr. P). The junior made it through the whole game despite the defensive lapses and was charged with just five of Grand Forks Central's 22 runs. Hanson also recorded four strikeouts.

After watching a 5-0 lead turn into a 5-4 situation, Grand Forks Central put up an eight spot in the sixth inning. Hanson sat down the first hitter of the frame, but the next six reached base safely and the Knights expanded their lead to 10-4.

Hitless to this point, Bailey Jaeger (Sr. 1B) sent a moonshot over the left field fence for a two-run home run which served as the dagger.

The Pirates made three errors in the seventh inning and watched what was once a close game turn into a blowout.

Cortney Gereau (Sr. P) started in the circle for the Knights and earned the win after scattering five runs, three earned, around 10 hits. Gereau punched out three Crookston hitters and helped her own cause at the plate driving in three runs on two hits and scored three times.

Crookston rattled off 10 hits in this contest, four of them coming off the bat of Allie Love (Jr. RF). Love also collected two RBIs. Others who notched multi-hit games were Jenna Coauette (Fr. CF), who went 3-for-4, and Kenze Epema (So. 2B), who tallied two knocks.

"The pitchers we've seen in the last four or five games have brought velocity, and [Gereau] wasn't throwing quite as hard," Nessler said. "That might have been something for girls to have a little more confidence today. Today, they thought they could time this girl up, and they did and made some solid contact."

Coauette shined in the field as well making a diving catch to end the fourth inning and saved a run.

Despite the lopsided score, Nessler hopes his team can learn from the five innings in which this game was close.

"That's huge to be able to try and say that you're in a game or trying to take a lead," Nessler said. "When we were making a rally there, we just don't know how to handle that kind of pressure where you're in a close game, because we're not used to being in close games. It adds a different element, and we don't know how to deal with it yet."

The Pirates will not be able to dwell on this one for long with another game on Tuesday, May 7 against Red Lake Falls on the road at 5 p.m.
