Quinn Westlake shot an 82 to lead the team and place fourth.
In a meet where nine holes were played in Fertile and the other nine in Red Lake Falls, the Crookston Pirates came away in first place out of 14 teams with a combined score of 340. It is their first win as a team this season.
“I think the big thing is, as a collective group, we were 11 strokes better than we were last Friday,” Pirates Head Coach Steve Kofoed said. “I kind of made that our target chatting with a few of the guys while we were driving down.”
Quinn Westlake (Jr.) led the Pirates shooting an 82 which put him in a tie for second, fourth after the scorecard tiebreaker. Trey Christopherson (Sr.) carded an 85, Brock Heppner (Sr.) shot an 87 as did Ben Andringa (Jr.), Jaxon Wang (So.) finished with 88 strokes and Blaine Andringa (Fr.) ended his round at 92.
Kofoed commended his team as a whole for improving despite the cold and rainy conditions.
“I didn’t see as many poorly-executed shots from inside 100 yards as I did last week,” Kofoed said. “I saw some birdies today which I haven’t seen in the last two events. Quinn had four birdies himself today, Jaxon Wang made a great birdie on hole one in Fertile, so we ended up getting more of those good holes that helps our score.”
Up next for Crookston, a two-day meet in Fergus Falls at Pebble Lake Golf Course. The meet begins on Friday, May 3 at 4 p.m. and continues on Saturday, May 4 at 9 a.m.
“I wish we were a little better team score-wise, and, obviously, the position has to do with the quality of the teams we’re playing,” Kofoed said. “Hopefully, we can get under that 340 number a couple of times this weekend regardless if we finish in last or if we win the tournament.”
