The Golden Eagles fall to 13-37 (2-24 NSIC).

MINOT, N.D.—The University of Minnesota Crookston softball team was out in the Magic City for a doubleheader with the Beavers of Minot State.

Today’s doubleheader was the sixth and seventh time that these two programs have met this season. The Beavers dominated game one to win 9-1 and came from behind in the later innings to sweep the Golden Eagles on the day, 13-12 in a thriller. The Beavers win the season series 13-12.

With the sweep, the Beavers continue their push for the NSIC Playoffs and improve to 24-19 overall (13-13). The Golden Eagles fall to 13-37 (2-24 NSIC).

Game One

In game one, the Beavers came out of the gates and jumped all over Golden Eagle starter Paige Pitlick (Jr., P, Jordan, Minn.).

The Beavers jumped off to a quick start that was helped by an error on the Golden Eagles off the bat of Lauren Cowden that scored two. Alina Gonzalez singled through the right side that scored Cowden. All three Beaver runs scored in the first inning were unearned.

The Golden Eagles would get one run back in the top of the second inning that on a Samantha Proctor (Jr., C, Champlin, Minn.) walk with the bases loaded that scored Rocky Bjorge (Sr., 1B, Prior Lake, Minn.), to make it 3-1.

The Beavers would use small ball to score six straight runs in the third, fourth and sixth innings to win the game 9-1.

Offensively, the Golden Eagles had a good game in the batter’s box. Maggie Morales (Sr., 3B, Tuscon, Ariz.) and Bjorge each had two hits, while Mika Rodriguez (Sr., SS, Laveen, Ariz.), Malia Pula (Jr., UT, Gilroy, Calif.), Haley Strachan (Sr., OF, Phoenix, Ariz.), Darian Pancirov (Fr., UT/P, Las Vegas, Nev.) and Proctor each collected a hit on the day.

Pitlick got the start in the circle and gave up eight runs, just three of which were earned on eight hits and struck out one in 3.2 innings of work. Mikayla Jones (Sr., P, Huxley, Iowa) came in for relief of Pitlick and gave up one run on two hits in two innings of work.

Game Two

Game two was an absolute thriller that saw the Beavers walk off on the Golden Eagles, after scoring two in the bottom of the seventh inning.

The Golden Eagles got off to the best start they could ask for by jumping out to a 5-0 lead, highlighted by a solo homerun from Pancirov, her second of the season and second of her career, and a three-run homerun from Mika Rodriguez, her ninth of the year, to give the Golden Eagles a 5-0 lead.

The Beavers would come right back in the second and third innings, by scoring eight straight runs to lead 8-5.

This would almost feel like a basketball game, because the Golden Eagles would score seven straight runs in the fourth and fifth innings, highlighted by yet another three RBI knock from Rodriguez, this time a double to put the maroon and gold up 12-8.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, with the Beavers trailing 12-11, they would score the tying run on a Lauren Cowden RBI single. Alina Gonzalez would be the hero for Minot State driving in Maggie Mercer for the winning run, to win 13-12.

It was a hit parade for the Golden Eagles, who had 12 hits on the day, including a 4-4 three RBI day from Bjorge and a six RBI day for Rodriguez to go along with her two hits. Strachan also collected two hits on the day.

In the circle, Taylor Graven (So., P, Greene, Iowa) got the start and went 3.1 innings, while giving six runs on eight hits, while striking out four. Graven picked up the loss on the season.

The Golden Eagles will wrap-up their 2019 season this weekend with four games on Friday and Saturday, where we will also celebrate our six seniors. The Golden Eagles will host Augustana University on Friday at 2 and 4 p.m., for a doubleheader and Wayne State on Saturday.
