Crookston will play Detroit Lakes for the third time this season.

After going 4-18-1 on the year and 2-6 in the section, the Crookston Pirates enter the postseason as a five seed. The Pirates will be tasked with facing a No. 4 Detroit Lakes team who beat them twice this season.

Warroad (24-0, 6-0 Section 8A) and Thief River Falls (15-9, 6-3 Section 8A) took the one and two spots respectively and earned a first-round bye. East Grand Forks (14-8-2, 7-3 Section 8A), the three seed, will take on bottom seed Park Rapids (0-20, 0-8 Section 8A) in the other quarterfinals game.

In their first meeting, Detroit Lakes (6-17, 4-5 Section 8A) beat Crookston 6-2, and in the penultimate game of the regular season, the Lakers won 4-1. The Pirates' last win over Detroit Lakes occurred in the 2012-2013 season. The Lakers have won nine straight against the Pirates since.

Crookston needs one more win this season to statistically improve from a season ago when they went 5-21. The Pirates added two section wins this year compared to last with two victories over Park Rapids.

Although the records appear identical, Crookston showed improvement from 2017-2018. In 23 games, the Pirates surpassed their goal total in 2017-2018 (38 goals in 26 games) with 40. In terms of goals allowed, Crookston surrendered 6.1 goals per game last season and dropped that number to 4.9 this year.

The puck drops in Detroit Lakes on Friday, February 8 at 7 p.m. The winner will advance to the semifinals against Warroad.
