Geist brings home the first state medal for the Pirates this year.

Four days before running at the Minnesota State Cross Country Meet at St. Olaf College, Katherine Geist (Jr.) said in an interview with the Times, "I think I really just want that top ten. That’d be awesome. I really want a medal.”

With the top ten finishers earning medals, Geist, the runner who rattled off 11 straight victories including a section championship, accomplished her goal when she took ninth out of 175 runners at the state meet with a time of 18:58.

Geist's time served as her fastest at the state competition as she shaved 72 seconds from a year ago and 36 seconds from her previous best state run in 2016. Ninth place also ranks eight spots better than her 17th place finish in 2016.

This was Geist's fifth time running at the state meet and she will have another chance to qualify during her senior year.
