Crookston fell behind early to Roseau and could not make up the lost ground in a 35-12 defeat.
Crookston wrapped up their regular season schedule with a mid-week contest in Roseau. The Pirates kept their quarterback by community offense and could not match the scoring of the Rams in a 35-12 loss.
“We struggled to get going in the pass game as we were having trouble in pass protection,” Head Coach Scott Butt said. “Early in the game, we missed some tackles and [Roseau] did a good job running behind their big tackle which led to early scoring chances. The other problem was we put our defense out there to defend a short field way too much.”
All of the scoring by the Pirates (2-6) came in the second half. Joe Doda (Sr. RB) rushed for his third touchdown of the season and Gunnar Gunderson (Fr. QB), who played under center in the second half, found the endzone for the first time this year on a run.
Neither team’s offense proved effective in passing, but the Rams’ running game led to four touchdowns.
Roseau ran for three scores in the first half and blanked the Pirates through the first two quarters to lead 20-0 at halftime.
Crookston’s defense contained the Rams in the third quarter keeping them out of the endzone. Finally, The Pirates cut into the deficit with Doda’s touchdown and trailed 20-6 after a failed two-point conversion attempt.
With nine minutes to go in the fourth quarter, Roseau added insurance points with their fourth rushing touchdown of the game. The Rams later removed all hope of a Crookston comeback when they recovered a fumble and returned the turnover for a touchdown.
Down 35-6, the Pirates put a final drive together and Gunderson capped it off with a touchdown run with 20 seconds to play.
The Pirates are guaranteed at least one more game and it will take place when the Section 8AA Tournament commences on Tuesday, October 23. Crookston will square off against Roseau for the second time in as many weeks.
“We have to regroup and look at what we did well and then expand on it as we have to go back to Roseau,” Butt said. “So we need to look at what adjustments we can make and go from there.”
