Crookston dropped the season-opener 6-0.

The Crookston Pirates faced a 2-0 deficit at halftime, but four more goals by Hillcrest put the game out of reach and handed the Pirates their first loss of the season.

"We played great the first 20 minutes," Head Coach Sarah Reese said. "After that, they got two quick ones and we were mentally and physically deflated."

Crookston put players at different positions in the second half, but to no avail. The Pirates still struggled to transition from the middle third to attacking which resulted in minimal chances to score.

In the net, Kylee Meier finished with eight saves.

Despite falling short in the first game, Reese highlighted the play of Reese Swanson, Meier, Brinna Egeland and Olivia Huck.

At 0-1, the Pirates return home to face St. John's Prep on Thursday, August 30. Game time is 3 p.m.
