Here is the weekly update on all things youth hockey in Crookston including the players of the weekend
Crookston went 0-3 for their three games this past weekend, but do not let that fool you. The boys battled hard and played a very solid weekend of hockey. On Friday night, Crookston lost a hard fought battle to the visiting Red Lake Falls club 6-3. All Crookston scoring came off the stick of Gavin Aakhus. Brady Chandler played a solid game in net recording 14 saves.
On Saturday the team traveled out to Bemidji for two games. In the first game, Crookston jumped out to a 2-0 lead for the majority of the opening period before Bemidji White scored a late goal to make it 2-1 after the first period. Bemidji came out strong in the second period and took a 4-3 lead going into the third period. A determined Crookston squad could not find the back of the net in the third period resulting in a 6-3 final. Crookston scoring came at the hand of Gavin Aakhus recording his second straight hat trick. Teegyn Johnson had another solid day between the pipes for Crookston and ended up with 30 saves for the game.
Crookston faced off against Bemidji Blue to close out the weekend and jumped out in front first when Conner Hanson scored off of a brilliant pass from Evan Shockman. Bemidji would net the next two to take a 2-1 lead after the first. Crookston was plagued by penalties in the second period. The highlight of the period was killing off a long 5 on 3 penalty. Bemidji increased their lead to 5-1 at the end of the second. Crookston wasn’t willing to go away quietly as Dexter Janek scored a third period goal off a spectacular pass from Conner Hanson, but Crookston fell 6-2. Brady Chandler proved to be Crookston’s best penalty killer as he came up with 39 saves for the game.
The Crookston Squirt B team is in high spirits as they go into the Christmas break, they are looking forward to quality time spent celebrating with friends and family as they re-charge the batteries for a busy January schedule!
The Squirt A’s had a great a week going 2-1 in district play. Tuesday evening was an 8-1 loss to East Grand Forks, the top team in our District. Friday night they hosted Red Lake Falls with Crookston coming out strong with Connor Muruska (2) Ryan Street (2) Brandon Colborn and Greyson Ecker all scoring to take the lead 6-1. However, in a crazy turn of events, Red Lake Falls scored four goals in the final three minutes of the game but Crookston managed to hold on for a 6-5 win. Sunday, they traveled to Bemidji to play one of their best games of the season. The first period, the boys skated close with Bemidji but found themselves down 2-0. The start of the second period, the boys came out flying. Connor Maruska got the first goal for Crookston on a bar down shot from the top of the circles. Greyson Ecker added one more to end the second period 2-2. In another exciting third period, Brandon Colborn scored a rebound goal to get the lead 3-2. Bemidji answered with another goal to tie it up 3-3, but with about five minutes remaining, Ryan Street scored the fourth goal of the game. The boys remembered the lessons learned from the Red Lake Falls game and did all the little things right to close out a tight game, including defenseman Garret Fischer who cleared the puck away before it crossed the goal line with 20 seconds left in the game. Goalies Dylan Thode and Parker Kelly combined for 30 saves in the game.
The Crookston 10U girls traveled to Bemidji on Saturday, December 16 beating them 6-1. Scoring that game was Addie Fee & Logan Brekken (2 goals each), and Karena Longoria & Ashlyn Bailey (1 goal each). Goalie Natalie Longoria saw 21 shots, saving 20.
On Sunday, the Crookston 10U girls hosted Warroad. Warroad came out strong and within the first 12 seconds scored and kept the pressure on all game beating them 10-0. The girls had a few opportunities to score on breakaways and a few rebounds, but struggled to find the back of the net.

The Crookston 12U girls participated in three games this past week. On Thursday evening they travelled to Thief River Falls and lost 11-0. On Saturday the girls travelled to Bemidji and lost a tight game 2-1. It was a very good bounce back from our last game and the girls worked extremely hard. After falling behind 2-0, the girls fought back to get within one and applied the pressure late and came up just short. After the game, the team went to watch the Bemidji State women’s team take on Mankato at the Sanford Center. During the first intermission, they skated in a scrimmage against the Bemidji 12U team. It was a great experience for the girls to play in a venue like that and they all had fun. On Sunday we played a skilled Warroad team and lost 10-0. The coaches are proud of the girls as they fought through adversity with a number of teammates being sick this past week. Hopefully the squad gets rested up and healthy for more action after the holidays.
