England native to join 2017-18 squad.

The University of Minnesota Crookston women’s basketball program announced the signing of Maria Delgado to a National Letter of Intent.

“We are very excited about the addition of Maria to our women’s basketball team,” UMC women’s basketball head coach Mike Roysland said. “Maria is someone who can really stretch the court with her outside shot. She also is someone who possesses strong court vision and a great ability to find her teammates. We are excited to have her as a Golden Eagle.”

Delgado was born Oct. 2, 1996 to Natalia and Daniel Monteiro and is a native of London, England. Prior to her schooling in the U.S., Delgado attended Barking Abbey Academy in Barking, England.

A 5-foot-7 guard, Delgado began her collegiate basketball career at Miles Community College, a Division I junior school in Miles City, Mont. As a freshman, she averaged 12.1 minutes-per-game and 2.5 points-per-game. As a sophomore, Delgado appeared in 27 games and averaged 3.8 points- and 2.6 rebounds-per-game. She is also an Academic All-American honoree.

Delgado is the fourth signee to play UMC women’s basketball next season, joining fellow newcomers Kasy Harper, Ashley Freund and Abby Guidinger. She is the first junior college signee in the class and the first from outside the United States.

Delgado is currently undecided on a major.

All signees are contingent upon admission to the U of M Crookston and compliance with NCAA rules, including certification by the NCAA Eligibility Center.
