Turnovers and missed field goals cost Crookston win.

Riding on a combined 39 points by Bailey Folkers and Emma Borowicz, the Crookston Pirates girls basketball team looked to turn the tides of a three-game losing streak into a winning one Monday night.

However costly turnovers and missed field goals by the Pirates were too much to overcome as the Stephen-Argyle Storm rolled to a 58-54 win in Argyle.

“We just didn’t play well enough to win that game,” Pirates head coach Darin Zimmerman said. “Had too many mistakes. We left a lot of points (out there). We missed 10 or 11 free throws, missed points in the paint that we could have had and had a lot of turnovers.”

The game was kept fairly even throughout the first 18 minutes of play before Sttephen-Argyle took a 28-27 lead into halftime.

Back-and-forth scoring continued into the second half before Crookston snuck out to a 51-50 lead.

The lead did not last long, however, as the Storm answered with a 3-pointer and a field goal to retake the lead at 55-51.

“The kids showed some resiliency to come back and take the lead because we weren’t consistently making enough plays or plays that we want to make,” Zimmerman said. “We would have been sort of forturnate to come away with (the win) because we just had too many mistakes tonight.”

Stephen-Argyle never looked back as the squad ultimately claimed the 58-54 victory and its 19th win of the season.

Crookston falls to 7-18 on the year with Monday’s loss.

The Pirates return to action at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Crookston High School for its final game of the season against the Breckenridge Cowboys.

“We have to get better,” Zimmerman said. “I think some of it is a mental approach. We had turnovers where we were switching on pivot foot and we can’t have that in the 25th game of the year like we did (last night). We just got to be physical and get after it in the next few days in practice because it’s go time right now.”

Friday’s contest will mark the last regular season home game for Crookston Pirate seniors Jenna Porter, Tiffany Hanson, Kennedy Cwikla and Brita Fagerlund.
