Minnesota’s draft wolf plan update is ready for public review

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources welcomes comments through 4:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 8, on a draft of Minnesota’s updated wolf management plan that incorporates the diverse views of Minnesotans and will guide the state’s approach to wolf conservation once finalized.

Gary Louis Klava

Gary Louis Klava, 82, was born at home on September 9, 1939 in Minto, N.D. to Theodosia (Wosick) and Emil Klava. He was the third of their five children. When the family moved to Crookston, he met and married the love of his life, Joyce (Myerchin) on June 9, 1962. Always one for a road trip and adventure, they traveled west to Washington for the World’s Fair and south to California. While returning back east through Colorado, they fell in love with the area. Upon their return to Minnesota, they gave their notice and moved to Colorado two weeks later. Gary and Joyce raised their four children in Arvada for 32 years and Hotchkiss for 13 years. Dad opened his first business, Klava’s Treadmill, on September 25, 1975 on the corner of 58th and Ward Road. In 1979, he bought land up the hill on 52nd and Ward and built Klava’s Service Center which remains a fixture in the community to this day. In 2007, they moved near Austin, Texas, where they met wonderful friends while being involved in hospice work and their faith community, St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church.

Kenneth King, Jr. (Kenny)

Kenneth King, Jr. (Kenny) passed away on June 16, 2022, in Crookston. Kenny was born on June 1, 1980, in Charlottesville, Va. He was so loved and will be very missed. Services will be held in private.

Former Minnesota Viking Tommy Kramer makes appearance in Crookston

Former Minnesota Viking Tommy Kramer, right, made a scheduled appearance at IC Muggs June 24 to sign autographs and take photos with fans including Crookston Times Sports Editor Natalie Dillon, who is shown on the left. Kramer played for the Vikings from 1977- 1989 with career highlights in 1986 when he was named the National Football League's (NFL) Comeback Player of the Year, played in the Pro Bowl and was a NFL passer rating leader. Kramer also made an appearance at the Crookston Eagles Club June 24 where country music singer Dariann Leigh was hosting a concert fundraiser for Crookston Ox Cart Days. (Submitted photo)

Polk County airboat sinks during buoy installation

An airboat owned by the Polk County Sheriff's Office sank to the bottom of Maple Lake on June 22 during buoy installation and two sheriff's deputies were transported to Essentia Health in Fosston for non-life threatening injuries. The other two passengers, two Polk County Highway Department personnel, were uninjured and all four passengers were wearing life jackets at the time of the incident.
