It is with regret that CherryRoad Media announces the closing of The Crookston Times

Our company is dedicated to the preservation of community journalism. Since the purchase of our 1st paper in late-2020 to today, we have prided ourselves on our ability to fight the difficult battle that newspapers face in today’s digital society. Unfortunately, that battle cannot always be won.

The Crookston Times has struggled in recent years to find its footing in this community. Since purchasing The Crookston Times, CherryRoad Media has been unable to avoid financial losses every month. The paper was losing money when we bought it, and it continued to do so. We must now come to terms with the fact that we do not have a path forward to sustainability.

And we thank those who have supported us.

Volleyball Wins First Set in Three Weeks, Falls to Thief River

Despite a 1-3 loss to Thief River Falls, the Crookston Pirates volleyball team electrified Crookston High School gym, celebrating their second set victory. The last time the Pirates won a set was in their season-opening match against Bagley on August 25.

Ask A Trooper: Highway Hay Loading

Question: Is it legal for farmers to load hay on a state highway? Our neighbor bales several miles of state highway ditches. To load the round bales he drives down the highway with a pickup and bale wagon. His son is in the ditch with a tractor and loader. The son gets a bale on the loader and driving perpendicular to the road drives up the ditch and puts the bale on the bale wagon. The son with the loader stops with his front wheels on the shoulder of the road and puts the bale on the trailer. The bale wagon is stopped on the state highway in the lane of traffic so the bale can be loaded. Is this legal?

LIVESTRONG at the YMCA Starts New Session on Sept 26

Grand Forks, ND – A new LIVESTRONG at the YMCA session is scheduled start Monday, September 26, at the Altru Family YMCA in Grand Forks. Classes will meet Mondays and Thursdays, 9:15-10:45 am.

Minnesota Crookston Men’s, Women’s Golf Make History

The University of Minnesota Crookston men’s golf placed second out of 11 teams at the Bemidji State University Invitational with rounds of 294 and 293, while the women's golf team placed fourth out of nine teams at the Tracy Lane Memorial at Bemidji Town and Country Club in Bemidji, Minn.

Crookston Tennis Avenges Losses to Moorhead, Thief River Falls

The Crookston Pirate girls’ tennis team carried its success from the weekend into its home triangular on Tuesday, September 13, defeating Moorhead and Thief River Falls. The Pirates lost to Thief River Falls 2-5 and tied with Moorhead 3-3 earlier this month.

Crookston Upsets Pelican Rapids 1-0

The Crookston Pirate boys’ soccer team defeated Pelican Rapids 1-0 on their home turf on Tuesday, September 14. The win is just the Pirates’ second of the season and arguably their best performance yet.
