It is with regret that CherryRoad Media announces the closing of The Crookston Times

Our company is dedicated to the preservation of community journalism. Since the purchase of our 1st paper in late-2020 to today, we have prided ourselves on our ability to fight the difficult battle that newspapers face in today’s digital society. Unfortunately, that battle cannot always be won.

The Crookston Times has struggled in recent years to find its footing in this community. Since purchasing The Crookston Times, CherryRoad Media has been unable to avoid financial losses every month. The paper was losing money when we bought it, and it continued to do so. We must now come to terms with the fact that we do not have a path forward to sustainability.

And we thank those who have supported us.

Speech team finishes season

Crookston Speech competed at their last invitational of the season this past weekend at Detroit Lakes, with several students bringing home awards. Awards earned by students included: Samantha Rezac - 1st place in Storytelling Zara Baig and Samantha Rezac - 1st place in Duo Jack Anderson and Thor Harbott - 2nd place in Duo Zara Baig - 3rd place in Humor The following students received ribbons as honorable mentions: Brandon Wandrie Original Oratory Shayla Azure - Humor and Drama Meliyah Moore - Extemporaneous Reading Zac Plante - Humor Ivan Luckow - Creative Expression Also competing included Mareile Meyer in Poetry, and John Lisov in Humor.

Minnesota Crookston Baseball Takes Down Golden Bears 12-0 in Series Opener

OMAHA, Neb. – The University of Minnesota Crookston baseball team opened their series with Concordia University St. Paul with a 12-0 run-rule victory Saturday, March 25 at Warrior Field at Omaha Westside High School in Omaha, Neb. Jake Dykhoff (R-Sr., RHP, Wadena, Minn.) tied the school record of 14 strikeouts previously set by him on April 10, 2021 against Concordia St. Paul, and Jayden Grover.

Minnesota Crookston Equestrian Set for 2023 ECAC Championships in Brookings

The University of Minnesota Crookston equestrian team will compete in the ECAC Championships March 23-25 at DeHaan Equestrian Center in Brookings, S.D. The Golden Eagles are the fifth seed in Dual Discipline. They will open the Championships on Thursday, March 23 against fourth-seed South Dakota State University. University of Tennessee Martin is the top seed, Delaware State University is the second seed, while the University of California Davis is the No. 3 seed.

Carlson Group: Minnesota Mining Permit Laws are Archaic

In a letter sent this morning to Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, former Minnesota Governor Arne Carlson has requested a “full temporary moratorium on all (mining) projects that threaten human health.” The Carlson letter comes on the day court proceedings continue on whether a design put forth by PolyMet Mining to hold residue from copper- nickel mining near Minnesota’s Coundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness Area can be safely constructed. Carlson charged that any permit for such construction is based on “archaic laws that totally neglect the impact on health or the economies and quality of life of nearby communities.” In his letter to the governor’s office, Carlson noted that Governor Walz had also expressed his concern in 2019 when he suggested the need to modernize permit laws, adding that the state’s own experts could not vouch for the safety of the PolyMet project.

Meteorological spring is upon us, but if one didn’t know better, we’re a long way from believing it. While Old Man Winter will officially be gone on March 20th, there are plenty of signs of springtime.

T-Mobile awards Hometown Grant to Crookston

T-Mobile announces Crookston as one of its latest 25 Hometown Grant recipients. The $50,000 grant will go toward rebuilding the steps of the 100-year-old historical Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception now used to hold community events and gatherings, including the annual Ox Cart Days. The project was submitted by the Prairie Skyline Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to restoring historic Crookston buildings for the community.
