Margie Lavern Olson, 94, Fertile, MN, formerly of Beltrami, MN, died on Saturday, December 3, 2016, at her residence in Fertile with her daughters by her side.  She was born on October 20, 1922 to Oliver and Clara (Durdahl) Nordlum in Crookston, MN.  Margie's family moved to Detroit, MI, during her Elementary School years and returned to rural Beltrami in her late Junior High School years.  They lived on the Nordlum farm Northeast of Beltrami, and only two miles from Alfred's family farm.  Margie and Alfred's courtship began at a friend's picnic.

On May 13, 1943, Margie was united in marriage to Alfred Olson in Crookston and cherished 67 years of wonderful companionship.  They continued to live on the farm site Alfred’s great-grandfather founded until Margie moved to Summerfield Apartments, Fertile, in 2011.  Over the years, Margie and Alfred raised cattle, hogs and chickens and grew small grains.  In the late 1970’s, they began renting the farm land, but continued to garden flowers and vegetables--canning and freezing the produce to eat and share with family and friends.  Margie was active in 4-H during the years her children were involved with the club.  Margie and Alfred were longtime members of Varnes Lutheran Church at rural Fertile until it closed, and then joined Trinity Lutheran Church, Beltrami.  For the past few years, Margie was blessed to have the assistance of her daughters, Mary and Carol, as her health began to decline.

For years steady, farm work consumed their time. Because of their deep love for one another Margie and Alfred would take short trips together to refresh their relationship.  During the course of the growing season, Margie and Alfred liked driving in the area looking at crops and sharing a picnic.  She was an accomplished pianist, a creative handy worker (crocheting, sewing, making doilies and Norwegian Needlepoint).  Her genuine smile, quick wit and gracious manners made Margie a joy to be with.

Margie is survived by her two daughters: Mary Anderson, Eagan, MN, and Carol (Ron) Brown, Blaine, MN; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren: Shane (Brenda) Anderson, and their children, Gabriel, Grace, and Jayden, Minneapolis; Rebecca Anderson, Minneapolis; Andreas Olson, Idaho; and Scott Brown, Portland, OR, and Christopher Brown (fiance', Jaimin Brown), Minneapolis; one brother, Jerry (Arlene) Nordlum, Portland, OR; several nephews, nieces, and cousins.  Her parents, husband, Alfred 2011; son, Raymond, 2014; brothers; Kermit, Laurie, and Billy; sisters Lois and Betty preceded her in death.
