Stella Hess, 97, Ada, MN, died Saturday, November 19, 2016, in Seattle, WA.

Stella Signora Torkelson Hess was born on September 12, 1919 in Shelly, Minnesota to Anne Sofie and Tubal Harrison Torkelson. She grew up on a small farm in Norman County, Minnesota with her sister Theone and brother Alton. Always a hard worker, Stella dedicated her life to her family and to farming. As a girl, Stella had to sacrifice her dream of furthering her education in order to help her parents. But she remained an astute student and teacher of

life. In the last two years, Stella delightedly resumed her “schooling” at Aegis of Edmonds, where her radiant smile and quick-witted answers brightened up the activity room every day, morning to night.

On her 21st birthday (September 12, 1940), Stella married the love of her life, Floyd Ray Hess. Together they built a successful family farm in Good Hope Township and raised a family of four children, Sharon, David, Jane and Patricia. A perfectionist, Stella held both herself and others to the highest of standards. Her meticulous attention to detail was evident in all her endeavors, including her interior decorating and her delicate baked goods. Her elaborately decorated cakes were requested for many church events, birthdays and anniversaries. Family members still crave the Norwegian kringle she made by the dozens at Christmas time and tucked into packages mailed across the country.

Stella enjoyed being with nature, particularly plants and animals. She spent many hours planting in her garden, canning and preserving her bounty, and spoiling her cat, Punkin. In later years, neighbors could often find Stella jauntily driving her riding mower across the lawn of her summer house in Ada. Music was a constant companion of Stella’s. After listening to a piece of music one time, she would replicate it on her piano or organ. Her playing often filled the house with music and her heart with joy as she imagined the birds joining her in song.  Despite the hours spent working the farm and raising her family, Stella always made time to contribute to her community and the wider world. She was an active member of her community churches, Bethany Church in Good Hope Township and St. Paul’s Lutheran in Crookston, serving as treasurer, Alter Guild and Ladies Aid member. Her generosity to causes near and far, particularly those benefitting children and animals, have touched more lives than she could ever know.

Stella has been described as “generous, supportive, sweet, honest, pretty, hardworking, smart and charitable.” She will be remembered for her dedication, her generosity and her wonder of the world.

On November 19, 2016, surrounded by her loving family, Stella was peacefully received into Heaven by her many loved ones waiting for her there. While we will miss her smiles, her “I love you”s and her delight at the smallest details of life, we are happy knowing that she is reveling in the company of her large family in Heaven and that her love will always be with us in our hearts. Stella was proud of her large family which included not only her children, nieces, nephews and grandchildren, but also many great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. She is lovingly remembered by her surviving children, David (MaryAnn) Hess of Phoenix, AZ, Jane (Harold) Modell of Seattle, WA, Patricia (Woody Park) Hess of San Pedro, CA, and her grandchildren Suzzanne, Sonya, Shani, Tamara, Anna and Kathryn. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 48 years, Floyd, her daughter Sharon, her siblings, Theone and Alton, and her parents, Sofie and Tubal.

Her family would like to thank the tireless caregivers at Callahan House of Shoreline, WA, Northwest Hospital in Seattle, WA., and First Lutheran Church of Richmond Beach, WA. We are so thankful for the loving dedication and care you provided to Stella and to us. Donations may be made in Stella’s name to one of her favorite charities, Sanford Children’s
