Measures taken this year to stop 'magnet thief.'
When United Way of Crookston leaders gathered this week at the agency's iconic thermometer mounted outside of American Federal Bank, there was a noticeable change in the thermometer's appearance. A layer of Plexiglas had been mounted on its front; the hope, United Way of Crookston Executive Director Lori Wagner said, is to prevent a "magnet thief" or "magnet thieves" from walking off with sections of the red magnets that are mounted on the thermometer as the fundraising campaign's bottom line rises, an act of malfeasance that has occurred numerous times in recent years.
Wagner thanked Kustom Kollision for crafting the section of Plexiglas, and she thanked Otter Tail Power Company for mounting it.
On Thursday, Oct. 10, the United Way will officially kick off the 2019 campaign at their 20th annual Soup and Chili Cook-Off And Chocolate Extravaganza. It will be held at the Crookston High School commons from 5:30 - 7 P.M. Price of admission will be $5 per person, and kids five years and younger will get in free.
For the first time, United Way will be holding a raffle at the event. All proceeds will go toward United Way’s 2020 goal to help fund 24 agencies in the community.
