Her depiction of the Battle of Iwo Jima features 1,700 miniature toy soldiers.
A local blue ribbon winner has made another heartfelt donation of her project, this time to Veterans Services and the Crookston VFW Post 1902. Crookston High School junior and 4-H grand champion Brylee Lessard recently donated her representation of the Battle of Iwo Jima which includes 1,700 miniature toy soldiers formed in the shape of the soldiers in the famous battle photo, an American flag, and scraps from her house glued to the bottom where they are kneeling.
“It took me about 12 hours to do,” Lessard explained. “At the Fertile Fair, I got a blue ribbon and grand champion, and went onto state and got a blue ribbon there.”
Lessard told the Times that Kurt Ellefson from Veterans Services contacted her mom, Melanie, and asked if she didn’t have any plans for the project that he would love to take it and bring it to the VFW to put on display.
