Polk County plows are being kept plenty busy on the roads, and the Polk County Highway Department advises residents that it is county policy not to replace mailboxes hit by snow pushed to the shoulder by plows.
The Highway Department encourages residents to purchase and install a swing-away mailbox, which costs $75, or a $150 if installed. Plastic mailboxes are strongly discouraged.
Because of the recent heavy snows, if you have a swing-away mailbox, the Highway Department asks residents to make sure the chain is loose and unwrapped. If the chain is wrapped up and tight, the swing-away support will not operate correctly and the snow being plowed could still damage the mailbox.
The Highway Department also reminds residents that it is illegal, and could also lead to potential civil liability, to place snow onto county highways.
