Public may view it June 7-21 at the Villa, with a special program on June 13
Villa St. Vincent/The SUMMIT announces that the Heritage Edition of the highly acclaimed Saint John’s Bible will be available for public display on their campus, June 7 to June 21, between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. each day.
The public is welcome to view this work by calling the Villa at 281-3424, extension 223, and speaking to Pastor Bill Humiston, spiritual care aoordinator.
This opportunity for the Villa was brought to life through a partnership between Benedictine Health System and the College of St. Scholastica, Duluth, Minnesota, to honor the 125th anniversary of their Sponsor, the Sisters of St. Scholastica Monastery.
The Saint John’s Bible is the first handwritten and illuminated Bible commissioned by a Benedictine monastery since the advent of the printing press more than 500 years ago. The one-of-a-kind Heritage Edition of the Saint John’s Bible is a full-size fine art edition of the original manuscript created under the direction of Donald Jackson, the artistic director of the original manuscript. Each volume received finishing treatments by hand and only 299 sets of the Heritage Edition were created.
“We are pleased to be able to share this beautiful work of art and faith with our residents, tenants, staff and community members,” said Judy Hulst, administrator/CEO. “The goal of the Saint John’s Bible is to ignite the spiritual imagination of people all over the world of all faiths – which aligns nicely with the work of our Sponsor, the Sisters of St. Scholastica Monastery.”
With support from the Benedictine Health System and the Benedictine Health System Foundation, Villa St. Vincent/The SUMMIT will have the Heritage Edition Volume “Gospels & Acts” for two weeks.
An opportunity for their residents, tenants, guests, staff and the public to experience the calligraphy and illuminations, the history, the cultural influences and the faith message will be held Wednesday, June 13 between 6-8 p.m., with Pastor Bill Humiston doing a special presentation at 7 p.m. Additional information about this event can be found by calling 281-3424, ext. 223, or visiting villastvincent.org.
About The Saint John’s Bible
The Saint John’s Bible is the first handwritten and illuminated Bible commissioned by a Benedictine monastery since the invention of the printing press in the 15th century. Saint John’s University in Collegeville, Minn., commissioned world-renowned calligrapher Donald Jackson, senior scribe to Her Majesty the Queen’s Crown Office at the House of Lords in London, England, to lead a team of scribes and artists to create this masterpiece.
