Five students from the University of Minnesota Crookston Business Department participated in the 2018 Harvard Global Case Competition, culminating in a trip to Harvard University. The Global Case Competition at Harvard is the world’s most prestigious student-organized case competition. This year's competition was organized by the Harvard College European Business Group (EBG), and the International Finance Student Association (IFSA). Teams came from top universities all over the world to compete and network at the event.

    Members of then U of M Crookston team included Emily Knaeble, a junior double majoring in accounting and finance from Littlefork, Minn.; Tori Hill, a senior double majoring in accounting and finance from Brandon, Manitoba, Canada; Chase Knickerbocker, a senior majoring in finance from Annandale, Minn.; Changle Li, a software engineering major from Beijing, China; and Zach Greenberg, a junior majoring in sport and recreation management from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. Joining the students were their faculty mentors for the competition from the Business Department: Abdulaziz Ahmed, Ph.D., Rutherford Johnson, Ph.D., Oxana Wieland, Ph.D., and Craig Miller, Ph.D.

    The students received the case in February consisting of a business scenario with an open ending. They had to determine what they would do, applying what they have learned in several classes. They were on a tight schedule, as there are only two weeks for the team to generate a solution.

    During the event at Harvard in April, the U of M Crookston team watched the finalists give their presentations live in front of judges who are senior business executives. The high-intensity weekend included a networking reception and a formal gala where U of M Crookston students networked not only with other students from around the world, but with CEOs and other executives from top global corporations.

    This is the second year the University of Minnesota Crookston has participated in the case competition taking advantage of the opportunity to use knowledge from the classroom and apply it to real-world situations. The competition underscores the level of exceptional opportunities available to U of M Crookston students.
