It is with regret that CherryRoad Media announces the closing of The Crookston Times

Our company is dedicated to the preservation of community journalism. Since the purchase of our 1st paper in late-2020 to today, we have prided ourselves on our ability to fight the difficult battle that newspapers face in today’s digital society. Unfortunately, that battle cannot always be won.

The Crookston Times has struggled in recent years to find its footing in this community. Since purchasing The Crookston Times, CherryRoad Media has been unable to avoid financial losses every month. The paper was losing money when we bought it, and it continued to do so. We must now come to terms with the fact that we do not have a path forward to sustainability.

And we thank those who have supported us.

Women’s tennis goes 0-2 on weekend

Winter storm slows UMC softball in Presentation Classic

The University of Minnesota Crookston softball team dropped three games at the Presentation Classic in Aberdeen, South Dakota after the winter storm postponed their first day of games. The Golden Eagles salvaged the final game with a 7-3 win over Dordt College of Iowa.

Breanna Kressin becomes triple gold medalist

Breanna Kressin traveled to Moorhead for her senior test on Thursday, February 10. She passed her free skate test, becoming a triple gold medalist in free skate, solo free dance and moves in the field.

Boys’ hockey picks up second consecutive win

The Crookston Pirates boys’ hockey team picked up its second consecutive win with a 5-2 victory over International Falls on Saturday, February 12. The first period was highlighted by the goalies, as the two teams put up a total of 23 shots with just one of them finding the back of the net in favor of Crookston.

Women’s Basketball Earns Weekend Conference Sweep

The University of Minnesota Crookston women’s basketball team earned its third straight win, as they defeated both Northern State and Moorhead this past weekend. On Sunday, the Golden Eagles edged the Dragons 68-60.

Youth wrestling stays busy

The Crookston Pirate youth wrestling program hit the mats on again on Saturday, February 5 and Sunday February 6. Eleven wrestlers traveled to Detroit Lakes on Saturday.

Breanna Kressin continues figure skating career at U of M

Senior Breanna Kressin signed her letter of intent to continue her figure skating career at the University of Minnesota on Monday, February 7 at Crookston High School. Breanna, a double gold medalist in moves in the field and solo free dance, desires to reach the pinnacle of figure skating, which includes continuing her career in college.

Pirates overcome slow start

The Crookston Pirate girls’ basketball team secured its 14th straight win with a 55-30 victory over Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton (DGF) on Monday, February 7. The girls got off to a slow start yet again, as the Rebels hung on for a 14-10 game in favor of Crookston.

The Crookston Pirates boys’ hockey team had many reasons to celebrate these last two days, as they honored their seniors with a game against Mayville-Portland (MayPort) and had four players score their first goals against Breckenridge.

UMC hockey qualifies for WCCHA Tournament

The University of Minnesota Crookston hockey team qualified for the WCCHA Tournament in their first season as a member of the WCCHA. The Golden Eagles earned the sixth seed. They end the WCCHA season with a 7-3-2 conference mark. Minnesota Crookston is currently 12-6-2 on the 2021-22 season.
