Education and American Democracy

“How Far are the Germans from the Japanese?” While questions about our democracy still loom on the horizon following our own recent elections, it bears little in comparison to the fear and anger that struck the great majority of Americans when World War II erupted. While tens of thousands hurried to enlist, millions more were “conscripted” by the United States government. Sadly, the vast majority had two things in common: (1) they were ordinary citizens with no prior military training and no related under-standing of war’s absolute indifference to an individual’s life; (2) in leaving their families and jobs they knew nothing—nor did the vast numbers of the enemy—of the far distant lands they would be sent to and the horrific consequences they would confront, all to meet the require-ments of leaders sharing one demand: victory at any cost! Phillips and Axelrod had a “right on” summation: “Overnight, boys hardly old enough to shave or drive a car, much less vote, were dropping bombs on centuries-old centers of western culture or dodging bullets in some of the most God-forsaken spots on earth.”

Education and American Democracy

Require a Rethinking of the Foundations of Democracy” Before we go forward with our historical discussion of American Democracy, we must be aware that there are events today—like the January assault on the Capitol or the arrest of the in-surrectionist group in Idaho—that challenge us to rethink the foundations and “guarantees” of our democracy. There are other occurrences— like Krysta Seneca of Arizona, running for office as a Democrat, then declaring after victory that she is now an Independent.

Hairy and Downy Woodpecker

I am fascinated by the numerous examples in Nature where two different species evolved to look alike. In some cases, the two species are very closely related, whereas in other cases the twin species are distantly related or not at all. Think of the monarch and viceroy butterflies, the least and eastern chipmunks, and downy and hairy woodpeckers, the latter pair which are the subjects of this week’s column.

THE BIRTH OF A RELIGION

Isaiah 9: 6-7 “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of -David, and upon his kingdom, even forever.”
