BWSR announces 2022 Outstanding Soil and Water Conservation District Employee

Bloomington, Minn. – Minnesota Board of Water and Soil Resources (BWSR) Executive Director John Jaschke presented the 2022 Outstanding Soil and Water Conservation District Employee award to Becker Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) Administrator Bryan Malone today during the Minnesota Association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts’ (MASWCD) annual convention in Bloomington. Malone also serves as Host District Manager for the Red River Valley Conservation Service Area (RRVCSA).

MN Energy Assistance Program increases payments to help homeowners and renters with heating emergencies

The Minnesota Energy Assistance Program has raised the maximum amount eligible Minnesota households can receive to pay for emergency fuel deliveries this winter by 150 percent. The Energy Assistance Program, administered by the Minnesota Department of Commerce, increased the maximum crisis benefit from $600 to $1,500, allowing eligible homeowners and renters to avoid the anxiety of a nearly empty fuel tank.

NAMI: Time to Invest the Large State Surplus in our Mental Health System

The current budget surplus should address increasing mental health needs in Minnesota, especially for our children and teenagers. Our mental health system isn’t broken, it was never built, and our current fragile system cannot meet the increased needs. Funding needs to be directed to address our workforce shortage – including the lack of diversity, increase rates for our community providers so that they can hire and retain staff, and increase funding for grant programs that work, such as school linked, shelter linked, mobile crisis teams, first episode of psychosis programs and more. Additionally, it is time to address the disparities in our mental health system.

Davenport tests effort to reduce salt on winter roads

DAVENPORT, Iowa — For the first snowfall of the year, Davenport is going to see what happens when road salt is not used on a neighborhood street. Spreading salt on roadways is an effective way to clear roads for safe winter driving, but a growing body of research shows that salt damages the environment, is corrosive to vehicles and roads and could have health consequences.
