RiverView Health Offers Many Options, Providers for Colorectal Cancer Screening

If you think only older people get colorectal (which includes colon and rectal cancer) cancer, you may want to think again. In truth, colorectal cancer is affecting more and more young adults. According to the American Cancer Society, colorectal cancer rates for people under age 50 have increased by 1 to 2% each year since 1990. Therefore, the recommended age for screening was lowered to 45 from 50 in 2021.

Speech team finishes season

Crookston Speech competed at their last invitational of the season this past weekend at Detroit Lakes, with several students bringing home awards. Awards earned by students included: Samantha Rezac - 1st place in Storytelling Zara Baig and Samantha Rezac - 1st place in Duo Jack Anderson and Thor Harbott - 2nd place in Duo Zara Baig - 3rd place in Humor The following students received ribbons as honorable mentions: Brandon Wandrie Original Oratory Shayla Azure - Humor and Drama Meliyah Moore - Extemporaneous Reading Zac Plante - Humor Ivan Luckow - Creative Expression Also competing included Mareile Meyer in Poetry, and John Lisov in Humor.

T-Mobile awards Hometown Grant to Crookston

T-Mobile announces Crookston as one of its latest 25 Hometown Grant recipients. The $50,000 grant will go toward rebuilding the steps of the 100-year-old historical Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception now used to hold community events and gatherings, including the annual Ox Cart Days. The project was submitted by the Prairie Skyline Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to restoring historic Crookston buildings for the community.

Polk County Paws & Pals 4-H Club students earn top honors in the Minnesota Zoo’s ZOOMS STEM Design Challenge

Apple Valley, Minn. – Students from the Polk County Paws & Pals 4-H Club were recognized last week for their STEM skills as winners of the 2022-23 ZOOMS STEM Design Challenge. The Minnesota Zoo’s award-winning program, presented by Flint Hills Resources, is a yearlong project that challenges elementary, middle and high school students from across Minnesota to develop solutions for real zoo-based scenarios. Students broaden their creativity, math, science, and engineering skills throughout the program and share their ideas in a final presentation. This 9th annual program experienced record-breaking participation numbers this year – including more than 120 teachers and 5,000 students from five states and two continents.
