School Board hears from World’s Best Workforce committee

World's Best Workforce (WBWF) was developed in 2013 as a Minnesota statute to ensure that school districts (and charter schools) enhance student achievement through teaching and learning supports, and Crookston's committee recently gave a report to the School Board. Dave Davidson, longtime teacher and current School Board member, is the chair of the committee and said they had a great meeting. He was directed to bring recommendations to the board such as addressing truancy issues, student's mental health, student credit recovery, finding additional substitute teachers or hiring a full-time sub, and hiring more counselors.

Climax receives federal grants, loans for water & environmental programs

The City of Climax will receive $674,000 in federal grants and $1,621,000 in federal loans for their water and environmental programs as part of the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) awards recently announced by U.S. Senators Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) and Tina Smith (D-MN.) The USDA awarded $115 million in loans and $15 million in grants to build and improve rural infrastructure in Minnesota.

Fitness Fever kicks off Feb. 6

Fitness Fever is back for the month of February featuring outdoor activity locations across Polk County. Polk County Public Health (PCPH), the Polk County Wellness Coalition, and many community partners and volunteers are excited to highlight this year’s outdoor family activities and the variety of active living choices available.

Crookston Library to host Spanish Storytimes beginning February 1

The Crookston Public Library will host its first Spanish Storytime on February 1 at 6 p.m. at the library. Spanish Storytime is a new monthly event offering non-Spanish speaking children and their caregivers the opportunity to gain exposure to a new language and a space for Spanish-speaking children to have an early literacy experience in language they speak at home.

Crookston Area Chamber elects new officers, selects new board members

The Crookston Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors has elected new officers and welcomes three new board members for 2022. Carrie Bergquist (River- View Health) has been selected as Chair, Ryan Wall (American Crystal Sugar) has been selected as Vice Chair, and Dana Jonsson (First Community Credit Union) has been selected as Treasurer. Lance Norman (River- View Health) moves into the immediate Past Chair position for 2022.

District Long Range Planning discusses proposed athletic complex

Crookston Public Schools' Long Range Planning Committee met January 26 to discuss building planning and financial status, and the upcoming August 9 referendum on the proposed Pirate athletic complex at Crookston High School was at the heart of the conversation. A timeline of public meetings, election notices, and the various methods of relaying information about the project were talked through plus the committee advised Superintendent Jeremy Olson to offer a "shameless plug" whenever he published articles in the newspaper or was on the radio.
