Summer Scholars Academy Offered by Northland Community & Technical College to Boost College Readiness

Future college students will now have the opportunity to bolster their mathematics skills and ease the transition to college courses with Northland’s Summer Scholars Academy. The Summer Scholars Academy is a free program that will run from July 12 through August 3, 2022, on Northland’s East Grand Forks campus.

The U.S. Department of Education Releases Proposed Changes to Title IX Regulations, Invites Public Comment

U.S. Department of Education In celebration of the 50th anniversary of Title IX – the landmark civil rights law that has opened doors for generations of women and girls – the U.S. Department of Education released for public comment proposed changes to the regulations that help elementary and secondary schools and colleges and universities implement this vital legislation. The proposed amendments will restore crucial protections for students who are victims of sexual harassment, assault, and sex-based discrimination – a critical safety net for survivors that was weakened under previous regulations. The proposed regulations will advance educational equity and opportunity for women and girls across the country to ensure that every student in America, from kindergarten through a doctorate degree, can achieve her dreams. “Over the last 50 years, Title IX has paved the way for millions of girls and women to access equal opportunity in our nation’s schools and has been instrumental in combating sexual assault and sexual violence in educational settings,” said U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona. “As we celebrate the 50th Anniversary of this landmark law, our proposed changes will allow us to continue that progress and ensure all our nation’s students – no matter where they live, who they are, or whom they love – can learn, grow, and thrive in school. Polk County airboat sinks during buoy installation

An airboat owned by the Polk County Sheriff's Office sank to the bottom of Maple Lake on June 22 during buoy installation and two sheriff's deputies were transported to Essentia Health in Fosston for non-life threatening injuries. The other two passengers, two Polk County Highway Department personnel, were uninjured and all four passengers were wearing life jackets at the time of the incident.

Former Minnesota Viking Tommy Kramer makes appearance in Crookston

Former Minnesota Viking Tommy Kramer, right, made a scheduled appearance at IC Muggs June 24 to sign autographs and take photos with fans including Crookston Times Sports Editor Natalie Dillon, who is shown on the left. Kramer played for the Vikings from 1977- 1989 with career highlights in 1986 when he was named the National Football League's (NFL) Comeback Player of the Year, played in the Pro Bowl and was a NFL passer rating leader. Ox Cart Days kicks off their summer cookouts at Hugo’s

Crookston Ox Cart Days festival kicked off their summer cookouts at Hugo's Family Marketplace on June 21 by selling brats, chips and a drink for $5 as part of a fundraiser. Removal of the temporary clay levee by the fire hall started

Removal of the temporary clay levee, as shown here on South Main Street in front of the Crookston Fire Department, began Monday, June 20 causing a brief road closure. Crews will continue to work on the area and on-and-off closures may occur. Previously, Public Works Director Brandon Carlson said in order for the city to be reimbursed for the temporary levee during the spring flooding of the Red Lake River they would have to remove it but the city may consider re-adding a temporary levee if there are additional high water concerns.
