It is with regret that CherryRoad Media announces the closing of The Crookston Times

Our company is dedicated to the preservation of community journalism. Since the purchase of our 1st paper in late-2020 to today, we have prided ourselves on our ability to fight the difficult battle that newspapers face in today’s digital society. Unfortunately, that battle cannot always be won.

The Crookston Times has struggled in recent years to find its footing in this community. Since purchasing The Crookston Times, CherryRoad Media has been unable to avoid financial losses every month. The paper was losing money when we bought it, and it continued to do so. We must now come to terms with the fact that we do not have a path forward to sustainability.

And we thank those who have supported us.

NDSU faculty member works to find breakthrough cancer treatment

Dali Sun, assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering at NDSU, was awarded nearly $400,000 from the National Institutes of Health to study new ways to find and treat pancreatic cancer. Pancreatic cancer is one of the deadliest forms of the disease.

On the morning of April 5, 2022, the Red Lake County Sheriff’s Office received a report from Hardware Hank at the Mall in Red Lake Falls that their store had been broken into sometime overnight. Red Lake County law enforcement responded to the business and conducted an initial investigation which revealed that several handguns had been stolen.

Those interested in exploring the art of journaling are invited to spark their creativity and inspiration with a presentation on April 20 from 6-7:30 p.m. at the Crookston Public Library. The presentation will cover different types of journals, types of media to use, and share ideas for inspiration. Participants will start their own journals to bring home with them to finish. Polk County to offer Skywarn Storm Spotter training classes

Polk County Emergency Management, in conjunction with the National Weather Service, will conduct Skywarn Storm Spotter training classes. A class in Crookston will be held April 20 from 6-8:30 p.m. at the University of Minnesota Crookston in Kiehle Auditorium.

Edward Thomas Miller III, 32, Ponsford, MN, was arrested March 28 by the Mahnomen County Sheriff's Department for felony third-degree drug possession. He remains incarcerated.

Kiel announces run for reelection in House District 1B

Representative Deb Kiel, R-Crookston, recently announced that she will run for reelection in District 1B. “I have been honored to serve our community for the last twelve years, and I look forward to continuing that work for the people and priorities of District 1B in the next biennium,” said Kiel.
