United Way announces cancellation of June 23 golf tournament

The United Way of Crookston regretfully announces the cancellation of the golf tournament scheduled for June 23. A variety of unforeseen circumstances has caused us to make this tough decision. After being gone for the past two years, we wanted to come back bigger and better than ever and we were unable to put together the kind of event we wanted. We always want to make sure we are hosting the best events for our cause and for all participants so we will double our efforts and come roaring back next year.

Western Governors University partners with Minnesota Rural Electric Association (MREA) to offer scholarships

In an effort to empower residents in rural areas of Minnesota to go back to school and further their education, Western Governors University (WGU) recently announced it has partnered with the Minnesota Rural Electric Association (MREA) to provide $50,000 in scholarships to Minnesotans who are served by an electric cooperative and are interested in pursuing a degree from the fully online, nonprofit university. The “Power Your Future” Scholarship is open to new students in rural areas of Minnesota who are employees of, member-owners of, or live in a household served by one of the 50 electric coops that power rural Minnesota.

Governor Walz signs Hometown Heroes Act firefighter health bill, Crookston fire chief shares comments to Council

Minnesota fire service leaders and legislators joined Governor Tim Walz for a ceremonial bill signing of the Hometown Heroes Act on June 13 in the reception room of the Capitol. Minnesota Legislature passed the legislation on June 30, 2021, which created the Hometown Heroes Assistance Program by providing $8 million through 2023 to bolster Minnesota firefighter health.

USDA Celebrates National Homeownership Month

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Rural Development State Director for Minnesota Colleen Landkamer recently kicked off National Homeownership Month. As part of the nationwide celebration, USDA is highlighting programs that help people in rural, Tribal, and underserved areas buy, build and repair affordable homes and to pay their rent in America’s smallest towns and communities.
