It is with regret that CherryRoad Media announces the closing of The Crookston Times

Our company is dedicated to the preservation of community journalism. Since the purchase of our 1st paper in late-2020 to today, we have prided ourselves on our ability to fight the difficult battle that newspapers face in today’s digital society. Unfortunately, that battle cannot always be won.

The Crookston Times has struggled in recent years to find its footing in this community. Since purchasing The Crookston Times, CherryRoad Media has been unable to avoid financial losses every month. The paper was losing money when we bought it, and it continued to do so. We must now come to terms with the fact that we do not have a path forward to sustainability.

And we thank those who have supported us.

Carol Jean (Schafer) Fay

Carol Jean (Schafer) Fay, age 97, died peacefully on July 4, 2022 at Graceful Living, Happy Valley, OR. Carol was born in Crookston on Christmas Day, 1924 to Leo G. and Reona (Werkman) Schafer. After graduating from Crookston Central High School in 1942, she attended secretarial school in Mpls. There she met and married Norman Fay in 1949 and they had two daughters, Cynthia and Susan; they divorced in 1973, but remained good friends.

A generous and enthusiastic person, Carol had a full and adventurous life – first as a travel agent in Mpls and later after moving to Santa Barbara, CA in 1978, where she worked as a secretary for Santa Barbara County. She was a loving daughter to her mother, Reona Schafer, and in 1987 Reona moved from Crookston to Santa Barbara to live with Carol and be close to her son, Lee Schafer. Carol excelled in entertaining and made and retained friends throughout her life. Her interests included beach walks and tidepooling, trips to visit family and a passion for nature, inheriting a green thumb from her father. She was an active member and sang in the choir at El Montecito Church in California. Once she moved to Portland, OR, Lake Grove Presbyterian Church in Lake Oswego became her spiritual home.

She was devoted to her family and is survived by two daughters and their husbands, Cynthia and Tom Arnich and Susan and Bill Johnson; two grandchildren and their spouses, Chris and Katie Arnich and Kelly and Shawn Robertson; and two great-grandchildren, Jackson (6) and Avery (4) Arnich. We are thanking God she has entered into His eternal rest.

Carol’s memorial service will be held on July 30 at 2 pm at Saving Grace Church, 13820 SE Webster Rd, Milwaukie, OR. She will be interred at a later date with her parents, Leo and Reona Schafer, in Crookston.

Memorials may be given to Samaritan’s Purse (samaritanspurse.org) – select button marked “Responding to the Crisis in Ukraine” – in memory of the loving care her caregivers gave her during her last days.
