Through her work as a business planning specialist, Greta Gerloff helps to bring advanced care to our patients, whether through facility-expansion proposals or researching new technologies and treatments. Greta was recently recognized as a Top 25 Women in Business by Prairie Business Magazine. The ladies featured in this publication are leaders in their careers and their communities.

Congratulations, Greta, on this impressive achievement, and thank you for your contributions to advancing local healthcare! Take a few minutes to get to know Greta better.

Why did you choose to work in healthcare?

I actually didn't choose healthcare, however, I feel fortunate to have discovered this field. I enjoy my current role as a business planning specialist because I get to collaborate with various departments and experience the inner workings of Altru's services.   I work with many talented providers at Altru, and their passion for helping patients is very inspiring.

What is your educational background and career history?

I received a bachelor's degree in finance from the University of North Dakota and an MBA from the University of Mary. My first job out of college was in accounting at Altru as a reimbursement/budget accountant. I remember my introduction to learning about healthcare was like drinking water from a fire hose!

What is your dream job?

I've always wanted to be a music producer; I'm obsessed with music. Or a radio DJ for KJ108 that seems like a cool job.

What are your hobbies outside of work?

I spend my free time traveling with family and following Pittsburgh Penguins hockey.   I also enjoy attending all the rock concerts possible with my daughter. Together we've seen Aerosmith, Metallica and Foo Fighters. We plan to see Ozzy Osbourne this summer.

Who is your career mentor or role model?

My former leader, retired CFO Dwight Thompson, has been my career mentor for many years.   I've always had great respect for his authority; he had clear expectations for his employees and a great sense of humor and humility.

I consider a former accounting professor of mine, Dr. Mary Loyland, as a role model. I met her nearly 16 years ago and was amazed by her authenticity. She encouraged me to speak up, be genuine and courageous. I feel lucky to call her my friend.

What advice would you give to someone just starting their career?

Realize that changing your career path is okay. I had defined my career path right out of college, and after a few years felt confined to it. My goals changed after experiencing several life-changing events. I finally embraced that fact a few years ago, made slight adjustments and I'm just as happy. Life is about the journey, right?
