Gathering the Community Voice

By Anna Phalen

Conversation surrounding the restructure of, and approaching relaunch of the Crookston Times, albeit a major undertaking, has been mostly positive.  With the delicate future of local print journalism in general, some would say any efforts towards papers survival would be wasted energy, but that’s not how my recent conversations have sounded.

You see, the Crookston Times was a brave little toaster back in the day; a go to piece of news, thoughts and ideas. A paper that at times even had the audacity to spark outrage in some. A paper that created stories about friends and family no longer with us and i  can guarantee stories like that are tucked away somewhere safe by the ones left behind missing them. Perhaps a little less when pouring over those “old day” stories. Our memories, our proof  in literal black and white that “Yes, Dad did have hair at one time, check this out.” Or whatever your family keeps tucked away from old newspapers.

People , if not believing for any other reason than sentiment, have faith that Crookston Times can bounce back, I am assured that our efforts will not be wasted.

We started the hunt for community contributors, and introduced the idea of considering being a part of our advisory board. I am relieved to say the support and encouragement are exactly what I felt this community was made of.

They say it takes a village, I can’t wait for you to meet mine
