It is with regret that CherryRoad Media announces the closing of The Crookston Times

Our company is dedicated to the preservation of community journalism. Since the purchase of our 1st paper in late-2020 to today, we have prided ourselves on our ability to fight the difficult battle that newspapers face in today’s digital society. Unfortunately, that battle cannot always be won.

The Crookston Times has struggled in recent years to find its footing in this community. Since purchasing The Crookston Times, CherryRoad Media has been unable to avoid financial losses every month. The paper was losing money when we bought it, and it continued to do so. We must now come to terms with the fact that we do not have a path forward to sustainability.

And we thank those who have supported us.

Dean G. Schenkey

Dean G. Schenkey, 78, Fertile, passed away peacefully on Monday, February 7, 2022 at Riverview Care Center in Crookston.

Dean George Schenkey was born on March 14, 1943, in Thief River Falls to George and Dorothy (Worman) Schenkey. He spent most of his life in the Beltrami area and graduated from Fertile High School. Dean had many long-time friends in the area. During the 70’s, Dean owned a gas station in Beltrami and worked in Minneapolis for a few years, but mostly he ran farm equipment for several local farmers in the Beltrami area.

Dean loved family and hosting holiday meals. The more family there, the happier he was! Dean also greatly enjoyed action movies, reading, and rock ’n roll music. He was an avid Vikings and Twins fan. His family will always remember Vikings games on TV evoking loud yells and pounding the arm of his chair during tense game moments!

Dean’s easy smile and laugh will be greatly missed by family and friends. He is survived by his sister, Pamela Clark; children, Jessie (John) Duffy, and Terry (Sherry) Schenkey; grandchildren, Sarah and Johnny Duffy, Jenae Schenkey, Kelsey Schenkey, Josh Awender, and Jason Awender; nephew, Gary Clark; great-grandchildren; and other nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Dorothy Schenkey; stepmother, Alice Schenkey; and grandson, Timothy Hedrich. Memorial Service: 2 p.m., Wednesday, May 11, 2022 at Erikson-Vik-Ganje Funeral Home, Fertile.

Inurnment: Fairview Cemetery, Beltrami.
