It is with regret that CherryRoad Media announces the closing of The Crookston Times

Our company is dedicated to the preservation of community journalism. Since the purchase of our 1st paper in late-2020 to today, we have prided ourselves on our ability to fight the difficult battle that newspapers face in today’s digital society. Unfortunately, that battle cannot always be won.

The Crookston Times has struggled in recent years to find its footing in this community. Since purchasing The Crookston Times, CherryRoad Media has been unable to avoid financial losses every month. The paper was losing money when we bought it, and it continued to do so. We must now come to terms with the fact that we do not have a path forward to sustainability.

And we thank those who have supported us.

The dusky grouse

The dusky grouse, formerly called blue grouse, is the second largest grouse in North America (although some accounts identify dusky grouse as the third largest because there are two subspecies of the larger sage grouse). Similar in appearance to other grouse such as Minnesota’s ruffed grouse, spruce grouse, sharp-tailed grouse, and prairie chicken, the mountainous landscape of the West wherever pine, fir, and aspen are abundant are where this special species of grouse calls home.

Crookston students attends Minnesota FFA Region 1 Fall Rally

On Wednesday, Sept. 28, 2022, Crookston High School FFA went to Ada, Minn. for the Minnesota FFA Region 1 Fall Rally. Crookston FFA had 25 members in attendance. Members went to sessions that explored careers, colleges, and life skills. They learned how to change a tire, fly a drone, and the basics of CPR. 10 members competed in the Best Informed Greenhand contest. MyKayla Garcia placed 10th overall out of 160 participants in the Best Informed Greenhand contest. The Crookston FFA Officer team competed in the Officer Demonstration Contest and are waiting for their scores. Overall it was a good leadership building and life skill learning experience.

HIGHER EDUCATION NEEDS COMMUNITIES’ SUPPORT, LEGISLATIVE FUNDING

As I begin my final year as president of Minnesota State University Moorhead, I marvel at the work of our faculty and staff to make an MSUM education accessible and affordable for all students. Last year, we revamped our scholarship program to offer larger automatic scholarships for incoming students, up to $14,000 over four years. We’ve removed our ACT requirement, allowing students to be admitted to MSUM based on their academic achievement in high school. And we’ll begin offering in-state tuition for everyone beginning in Fall 2023.

WE ARE ALL SAMARITANS

John 4: 9 “Then saith the woman of Samaria unto him, How is it that thou, being a Jew, askest drink of me, which am a woman of Samaria? For the Jews have no dealings with the Samaritans.” Several years ago we witnessed a surge of young people in the church being called as missionaries to Africa, Asia or parts of South and Central America. When this was announced in churches of various denominations around this country, halleluiahs and amens were heard echoing off the church walls.

Wanda Stroot

Wanda Stroot, 88, of Crookston passed away peacefully on September 27 at the Benedictine Livi ng Community in Crookston. Wanda Mae Wallace was born on September 16, 1934, in Grand Forks, N.D., to Earl and Florence (Allen) Wallace.
