Klemek Outdoors: Brown Bear

By the time you read these words, I will be paddling a canoe in southwest Alaska’s Katmai National Park and Preserve. Departing from Brooks Lodge along the shore of Naknek Lake, my trip with six other men will involve over 100 miles of paddling and fishing from the North Arm of Naknek Lake’s Bay of Islands, across a portage to lakes Grosvenor and Coville, to American Creek and down the raging Savonoski River to the Iliuk Arm of Naknek Lake and back to Brooks Lodge. And when our trip concludes, some ten days from start to finish, we will have encountered dozens of brown bears.

Polk County Fair will be held July 6-10 at fairgrounds in Fertile

Minnesota's Polk County Fair is celebrating 121 years of family fun July 6-10 at the fairgrounds in Fertile. "Five big days of action, excitement, entertainment and celebration" include exhibitions, rodeo, chocolate contest, midway carnival rides, talent contest, kid's pedal pull, baja racing, Dock Dogs, 5K walk/run, parade, demo derby, fireworks and much more.

‘Common Ground’ youth summer event to be held July 28 at Trinity Point

Area churches including First Presbyterian, Harvest, Trinity, St. Paul's, Cathedral and Our Savior's will be hosting their "Common Ground" summer event for youth in grades 7-12 on Thursday, July 28 at Trinity Point on Maple Lake. There will be time for fellowship and eating (dinner/snacks provided), group games and activities, free time to swim and lounge on the beach, and they'll end the day with worship and music around a campfire.

July Weed of the Month: MDA Report a Pest System & Palmer Amaranth

It’s weed season and with it comes the importance of being aware of invasive plants in the field. For example, Palmer amaranth is a fast-growing annual weed that is detrimental to row crops and can add higher production costs to farmers already dealing with high input costs. Palmer amaranth has developed resistance to multiple classes of herbicides and their different modes of action, making it very difficult and expensive to control.

Ask a Trooper: Driver’s License Classes

Question: How many classes of drivers’ licenses are there and what do they mean? Answer: Minnesota has four different classes of drivers’ licenses. Class D is valid for: • Single vehicles with a gross vehicle weight of 26,000 pounds or less; • Recreational vehicles; • Certain farm vehicles; • Towing vehicles, regardless of weight, provided the GVW of the combination does not exceed 26,000 pounds; • Towing vehicles up to 10,000 pounds GVW when the combination exceeds 26,000 pounds GVW.
