It is with regret that CherryRoad Media announces the closing of The Crookston Times

Our company is dedicated to the preservation of community journalism. Since the purchase of our 1st paper in late-2020 to today, we have prided ourselves on our ability to fight the difficult battle that newspapers face in today’s digital society. Unfortunately, that battle cannot always be won.

The Crookston Times has struggled in recent years to find its footing in this community. Since purchasing The Crookston Times, CherryRoad Media has been unable to avoid financial losses every month. The paper was losing money when we bought it, and it continued to do so. We must now come to terms with the fact that we do not have a path forward to sustainability.

And we thank those who have supported us.

Girls’ Basketball Advances to Section Semis Against Fergus Falls

The Crookston Pirates girls’ basketball team advanced to the Section 8AA Semifinals with wins over East Grand Forks (EGF) in the first round and Hawley in the Section Quarterfinals. Crookston lost to Hawley earlier in the season, so head coach Darin Zimmerman knew they’d have to play their game in order to come away with the win.

Garmen Scores 1,000th Career Point In Regular Season Finale

Jack Garmen scored his 1,000th career point and took his 100th career charge in the Pirates’ loss to Ada-Borup on Friday, March 4. Garmen took his 100th career charge early in the game, just three points in.

UMC Hockey Drops Final Series to UMary

The University of Minnesota Crookston hockey team concluded the 2021-22 season with 7-0 and 6-2 losses to defending ACHA Division II National Champion University of Mary. UMN Crookston finished the year 15-10-2 (7-3-2 WCCHA).

Crookston Loses a Pair of Non-Conference Games to Minot State

Minnesota Crookston softball travelled out to Minot for the third time this season, this time for a non-conference doubleheader against Minot State. The Beavers were able to take both games from the Golden Eagles by scores of 10-2 and 10-1, respectively, this afternoon.

Minnesota Crookston Falls in Pitcher’s Duel 3-1 to Saginaw Valley State

The University of Minnesota Crookston baseball team opened their trip to Florida with a 3-1 loss to Saginaw Valley State Sunday, March 6 at Chain of Lakes Stadium in Winter Haven, Fla. The Golden Eagles dropped to 5-9 with Sunday’s loss to the Cardinals.

$20K gift secures lean-to construction, enhances equine at UMC

The University of Minnesota Crookston Equine Program and the Equestrian Team reached its $35,000 fundraising goal last month which will allow for the construction of a new lean-to that will be built in May. In late October, the UMN Crookston Equestrian teams kicked off their fundraising for team travel, equipment and a new lean-to.

ECFE ‘Going to the Movies’ event a big hit

Early Childhood Family Education's "Going to the Movies" event at the Grand Theatre was called a huge hit by organizers. About 30 children and their parents, and some grandparents, enjoyed watching "Mickey Mouse Clubhouse" and dancing from Elmo at Sesame Street.
