Women's basketball: Dragons stay hot with 77-53 win over cold Golden Eagles

In the last few weeks, rivals Minnesota, Crookston and MSU-Moorhead have gone in very different directions. While the Golden Eagles have dropped five of their last six games, the Dragons have won five of their last six.

That includes Saturday's 77-53 win by MSU-Moorhead over Minnesota, Crookston in Crookston.

The Dragons dominated the boards, out-rebounding the Golden Eagles 49-29 and dominated in the paint with 32-16 advantage in points.

The loss drops Minnesota, Crookston to 8-10 on the season and 5-9 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. MSU-Moorhead is now 9-9 overall and 6-8 in the NSIC.

The Golden Eagles won the matchup earlier this season in Moorhead 67-59.

Golden Eagle point guard Brittani Wiese led all scorers with 18 points. Center Lauren Kessler added nine points off the bench, while Megan Eul had eight points and Carly Rothstein had seven.

Angie Jetvig led the Dragons with 17 points and nine rebounds, while Charette Kaycee added 16 points.

With the score knotted at 8-8 early in the first half, the Dragons went on a 5-0 run to jump out in front by five. MSU-Moorhead wouldn't give up the lead the rest of the way.

The Dragons stretched the lead to 11 points at the half, 44-33, and continued to increase it throughout the second half.

After a Rothstein three for UMC to start the second half, MSU-Moorhead went off on a 15-0 run over about an eight-minute span to lead 59-36 with 12 minutes, 29 seconds to play.

Minnesota, Crookston shot 29.8 percent (17-57) from the field, including 33.3 percent (5-15) from beyond the arc. MSU-Moorhead shot 46.8 percent (29-62) from the field, including a stellar 60 percent (9-15) from three-point land.

The Golden Eagles will look to get back on the winning track next Friday and Saturday when they host Mary and Northern State, respectively. Tip off for Friday's game will be at 6 p.m., while Saturday's game will begin at 4 p.m.
