After suffering a five-game loss to Thief River Falls in the season opener, the Pirates bounced back Thursday and took down Mahnomen in five games. The Pirates nabbed the first two games 25-21 and 25-11 but dropped the next two 25-19 and 25-12 before prevailing the game five 15-7. Crookston improves to 1-1 on the season.
Kailey Biermaier led the Pirates with 20 kills, nine digs and three blocks. Monica Wold added six kills, eight digs and three aces. Tori Schmitz had 30 assists, while Krystina Rasmussen had 24 digs. Colee Ulseth had six aces, while Mackenzie Sandstrom had three blocks.
Kaitlin Worms led Mahnomen with 13 kills, three blocks and five aces. Kyla Omang had 28 assists and Kayle Lundon had 17 digs.
Crookston won the junior varsity game 2-1, while Mahnomen won the freshman contest 2-0.
The Pirates will face Red Lake Falls on the road Tuesday, Sept. 7.
