Travis Ross missed the cut at the 110th U.S. Amateur by three strokes. He recorded a second round +2, 74 at The Home Course to bring his two-day stroke play total to +9, 152 to put him at t-108. The top 64 golfers after two rounds of stroke play advanced to the match play tree.
After Ross' first round +7, 78 on Chambers Bay Golf Course he was placed t-180 but before he began his second round Tuesday he vaulted up to around 129th place due to high morning scores.
Starting on the tenth hole, Ross opened his round double bogey-birdie-bogey. Another bogey on his fifth hole put him at +3 for the round but a birdie on the seventh hole got him back to +2. On his back nine, Ross parred the first five before a bogey on the sixth. A birdie on the eighth put him back at +2 for the round.
Jeff Wilson of Fairfield, Calif., who held the lead after round one with a -10 on The Home Course, shot a +3, 74 on Chambers Bay Golf Course but was able to hold his lead.
The Chambers Bay Golf Course played markedly tougher in the two rounds than The Home Course with an average round score difference of about four strokes.
Ross will be a senior on the University of New Mexico men's golf team this year.
The match play tree started today with 32 matches.
