The NFL season is fast approaching and that means the second season of the Times' Fantasy Field Goal (FFG). The first installment had 24 participants and it was a big hit with all of them. This year promises to be bigger and better.
Anyone can get in on the fun. Just shoot an email to me, Derek Martin, at sports@crookstontimes.com with your mailing address. Participants do not have to play every week of the NFL season. They can play as they like. However, their will be weekly prizes and a grand prize for the overall winner.
We had several suggestions from those who played last season on how to improve the game. One was to restrict the number of times a player can be picked by each participant. As much as I like that idea, it would cause my head to explode trying to keep track of everyone's players. Also, as we saw last year, picking the same three people every week is not the best strategy.
For those of you who have never played FFG, let me explain.
The object of FFG is to pick the best combination of available quarterbacks, running backs and receivers for each week of the NFL season. Each position earns points based on the number of touchdowns scored. Teams are able to pick a new combination for each week of the season.
Each touchdown a quarterback scores accounts for six points. Each touchdown a running back scores accounts for six points. Each touchdown a receiver scores accounts for six points. The participant with the most points at the end of each week is the winner.
Each participant will also choose the total score of the Vikings game that week as a tiebreaker. In week four, the Vikings' bye week, it will be the total score of the Packers' game.
